It has a population of 5,029 inhabitants.
Due to its nearby ski centers, it is an important tourist place. It hosted the 1928 Winter Olympic Games, the 1948 Winter Olympic Games and the 2003 and 2017 Alpine Skiing World Championships. It also hosted the 1995 World Polo Championship, where the local team reached the last place.
