The city of Berchtesgaden is located in the Bavarian Alps (Germany). It is located in the southern district of Berchtesgadener Land, near the Austrian border, about 30 km south of Salzburg and 180 km southeast of Munich. It is located north of the Berchtesgaden National Park.
Berchtesgaden is often associated with Mount Watzmann, which at a height of 2713 meters above sea level is the third highest mountain in Germany after the Zugspitze and the Hochwanner. This mountain is famous in the community of climbers for its east face (Ostwand), and for the existence of a deep lake of glacial origin by the name of Königssee of 5.2 km². Another notable peak is the Kehlstein mountain (1835 masl) with its Kehlsteinhaus shelter, also called The Eagle's Nest, which offers spectacular views to its visitors. The neighboring towns to Berchtesgaden are Bischofswiesen, Markt Schellenberg, Ramsau and Schönau am Königssee.
