Essen Cathedral
The Essen Cathedral (Essener Münster in German) is the seat of the Diocese of Essen (Diocese of Ruhr), founded on January 1, 1958. The cathedral, which is dedicated to the saints Saint Cosme and Saint Damien and the Virgin Mary , is located in the Burgplatz of Essen.
The cathedral was formerly the church of the Abbey of Essen, founded around 845 by Altfrid, Archbishop of Hildesheim, and around which the city of Essen expanded. The current building, which had to be rebuilt after World War II, is Gothic, built with sandstone and finished in 1275.
The cathedral of Essen is famous for its treasure (the Essener Domschatz), among which is the famous Goldene Madonna, the sculpture of the complete figure of the oldest Virgin to the north of the Alps.
The first bishop of Essen, Cardinal Hengsbach, was buried here in 1991.
