Hamburg
Hamburg (in German, Hamburg; pronunciation: [ˈham.bʊʁk]; locally: [ˈham.bʊɪç]; in lower German Hamborg, [ˈham.bɔːx]), officially the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg [n. 1] (in German, Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg) is a city-state [n. 2] located in northern Germany. It has an extension of 755 km² and 1 828 123 inhabitants (September 2017). Hamburg heads a metropolitan area of 5.3 million people and occupies neighboring states of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. Hamburg is the second most populous city in Germany, after Berlin, the third in Central Europe and the seventh in the European Union. The port of Hamburg is the second largest in Europe, only after the port of Rotterdam; and the ninth in the world. It is located 290 kilometers from Berlin.
The full name of Hamburg is "Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg" (Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg in German). This is due to its history as a member of the Hanseatic medieval league and as a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire, and also because it is a city-state and one of the sixteen federated states of Germany.

Hamburg Kunsthalle
The Kunsthalle in Hamburg (in German: Hamburger Kunsthalle) is an art museum located in Hamburg, Germany.
It consists of three related buildings. The first was built in 1863-1869 by architects Georg Theodor Schirrmacher and Hermann von der Hude; the others were erected in 1919 and 1997.
The museum houses an important collection of 19th-century painting with works by Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Philipp Otto Runge, Caspar David Friedrich, Adolf Menzel and Jean-Léon Gérôme. Another building is dedicated to modern art.
A Kunsthalle painting was affected by the theft of art from Frankfurt in 1994. While on loan at the Kunsthalle Schirn in Frankfurt, Caspar David Friedrich's Nebelschwaden painting was stolen. After negotiations with the thieves, a lawyer bought the painting; when Kunsthalle refused to reward him, he sued them and won.

St. Nicholas Church (Hamburg)
The church of St. Nicholas (in German, St.-Nikolai-Kirche), in neo-Gothic style, was one of the five main Protestant churches (Hauptkirchen) in the city of Hamburg. It is currently in ruins, and serves as a memorial and an important architectural place of interest. When Hamburg residents mention the Nikolaikirche, they usually refer to this church, and not to the new Hauptkirche of St. Nicholas, which is located in the Harvestehude district.
The church was the tallest building in the world from 1874 to 1876 and is still the second tallest building in Hamburg.
