The University of Rostock, located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, is the oldest university in northern Europe. It was founded in 1419 by Pope Martin V. Among his most famous students include astronomer Tycho Brahe, archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann and philosopher Moritz Schlick.

Today it has eight faculties (evangelical theology, philosophy and literature; natural sciences and mathematics; law; engineering studies; agriculture and the environment; medicine; political and social sciences). This is one of the two universities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with the University of Greifswald.
