Saarbrücken ([zaːɐ̯ˈbʁʏkən]; in French Saarbrücken [saʁ'bʁyk]; in Rhineland Saarbrigge [zɐ̯ːˈbrıgə]) is a city in Germany, capital and most populous municipality of the federated state of Saarland.
It is located on the bank of the Saar River in southwestern Germany, and it is a border town that borders the French Lorraine region to the south. Thanks to the freedom of movement in the territory of the European Union, Saarbrücken has become a communications hub and actively collaborates in several European territorial cooperation groups together with France, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Officially a city since 1322, its origins date back to the existence of Saarbrücken County in the Middle Ages, although its full development would be achieved in the nineteenth century with the Industrial Revolution and the momentum of mining in times of the German Empire. Today, the local economy is based on the industrial sector and the research and development of new technologies, supported by the academic work of the University of Saarland. The population exceeds 170,000 inhabitants.
