Schwerin
Schwerin ([ʃvɛˈʁiːn] or [ʃvəˈʁiːn]) is the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (in German: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), Germany. It is located 80 km south of the Baltic Sea. It is the second largest city (after Rostock) and one of the four most important economic centers in the federal state. Schwerin has about 96,000 inhabitants and that is why it is the smallest capital of the federated states of Germany.
With the passage of time the city expanded to the west and south of Lake Schweriner Innensee. Today there are twelve lakes in the city area. Already in the mid-10th century a commercial traveler reported a castle on a freshwater lake, a predecessor of Schwerin Castle, which was until 1918 the main residence of the Dukes and the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg. Since 1990 the castle is the seat of the regional parliament (Landtag) of the federated state.
