Almuñécar is a municipality and Spanish city of the province of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalucía. Located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, the municipality has 26 377 inhabitants (INE, 2018) and includes the population centers of Almuñécar, La Herradura and Velilla-Taramay.
It was originally a small Phoenician enclave called Sexi; hence the formal, sexitano gentilicio.
