Burgos cathedral

The Holy Cathedral Church Basilica Metropolitana de Santa María is a cathedral temple of Catholic worship dedicated to the Virgin Mary, in the Spanish city of Burgos.
Its construction began in 1221, following French Gothic patterns. It had very important modifications in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries: the needles of the main facade, the Condestable chapel and the dome of the cruise, elements of the flamboyant Gothic that give the temple its unmistakable profile. The last important works (the sacristy or the chapel of Santa Tecla) belong to the eighteenth century, a century in which the Gothic covers of the main facade were also modified. The construction and subsequent remodeling were done with limestone extracted from the quarries in the nearby town of Hontoria de la Cantera.
The decorative elements and the liturgical furniture of the interior belong to varied artistic styles, from the Gothic itself, the Renaissance or the Baroque.
In the cathedral, works by extraordinary artists are preserved, such as the architects and sculptors of the Colonia family (Juan, Simón and Francisco); the architect Juan de Vallejo, the sculptors Gil de Siloé, Felipe Vigarny, Rodrigo de la Haya, Martín de la Haya, Juan de Ancheta and Juan Pascual de Mena, the sculptor and architect Diego de Siloé, the rector Cristóbal de Andino, the glassmaker Arnao de Flandes or the painters Alonso de Sedano, Mateo Cerezo, Sebastiano del Piombo or Juan Ricci, among many others.
The design of the main facade is related to the classic French Gothic of the great cathedrals (Paris or Reims). It consists of three bodies topped by two lateral towers of square plant. Openwork needles of Germanic influence were added in the fifteenth century and are the work of Juan de Colonia. On the outside are also the covers of the Sarmental and the Coronería, gothic of the thirteenth century, and the cover of the Hairdressing, with Renaissance-Plateresque influences of the sixteenth century. The interior elevation of the temple takes as reference the Bourges Cathedral.
Numerous are the architectural, sculptural and pictorial treasures of its interior. They stand out from them:

The Gothic-Plateresque dome, first raised by Juan de Colonia in the fifteenth century and rebuilt by Juan de Vallejo in the sixteenth, following plans by Juan de Langres.
The Condestable Chapel, in the Elizabethan Gothic style, in which the Colonia, Diego de Siloé and Felipe Vigarny family worked.
The Spanish-Flemish Gothic altarpiece by Gil de Siloé for the Chapel of Santa Ana.
The great painting on panel The Holy Family of Sebastiano del Piombo, an outstanding work of the artist that was exhibited in the Prado Museum.
The choir stalls, Plateresque Renaissance work of Vigarny.
The tardogotic reliefs of the ambulatory, by Vigarny.
The numerous Gothic and Renaissance graves.
The Renaissance Golden Ladder, by Diego de Siloé.
The Holy Christ of Burgos, image of great devotional tradition.
The grave of the Cid Campeador and his wife Doña Jimena, his card of drag and his chest.
The Papamoscas, an articulated statue that opens its mouth at the bells of the hours. The Burgos cathedral was declared a National Monument on April 8, 1885 and a World Heritage Site by Unesco on October 31, 1984. It is the only Spanish cathedral which has this distinction of Unesco independently, without being linked to the historical center of a city (as in the cases of Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Ávila, Córdoba, Toledo or Cuenca) or in the company of other buildings, as in Oviedo, Seville or Zaragoza. It is also the highest-ranking Catholic temple in Castilla y León as it is the only temple that being a metropolitan cathedral is at the same time a basilica.
In 1994, following the detachment of a figure from the facade that occurred a few years earlier, deep restoration work began. In total, 30 million euros have been invested, which makes it the European monument that has received more funds for its restoration and that has been extended over time.

Cordon House (Burgos)

The Palace of the Constables of Castile, popularly known as Casa del Cordón, is a 15th-century palace that stands in the historic center of Burgos, presiding over the old Market Square, which was formed by the current squares of La Libertad and Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
Its promoter was the Constable of Castile, Don Pedro Fernández de Velasco, married to Mrs. Mencía de Mendoza y Figueroa.
The initial design is attributable to Juan de Colonia and his son Simón and it is a civil building of Gothic style of great beauty and harmony, although today it is very modified with respect to the original design.
Throughout the building there are numerous representations of the heraldic shields of the marriage owner of the palace (Velasco and Mendoza), and specifically the two shields that are on the main door are joined by means of a Franciscan cord, also sculpted in the stone.
A cord or chains hanging on the door of a house indicate that a king has slept in it, Dona Mencía was a devotee of San Francisco and had the Franciscan cord carved. This cord is the one that, in the popular collection, gave name to the building.
It currently houses a cultural center and the headquarters and headquarters of a banking entity.

It was chaired successively by Generals Dávila and Jordana. It disappeared with the creation in February 1938 of Franco's first government proper.

Burgos

Burgos is a municipality and a Spanish city located in the northern central part of the Iberian Peninsula. The city is the capital of the homonymous province integrated in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. In 2018 it had a registered population of &&&&&&&&&& 0175921. &&&&& 0175 921 inhabitants spread over an area of 107.06 km², which makes it the 36th most populous municipality in the country and the second in the autonomous community. Its The metropolitan area, made up of a large number of municipalities of reduced size, has some &&&&&&&&&&& 020000. &&&&& 020 000 inhabitants, which together with the central municipality form an urban area of about 200 000 inhabitants.
There is evidence of Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age and First Iron Age settlements on the hill of Castillo and on the hill of San Miguel, reliefs from which the city and the Arlanzón valley are dominated. [ 8] However, it is considered that the city was founded as such by Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos in the year 884. By 930 it became the capital of the county of Castilla, first dependent on the Kingdom of León and independent later by action of Count Fernán González. It was the capital of the kingdom of Castile, and intermittently of the Crown of Castile, from 1230 until the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. These dictated in the city in 1512 the Laws of Burgos, the first laws that the Hispanic Monarchy applied in America to organize its conquest, base of the current human rights. Later it was the capital of the old historical region of Castilla la Old, and it was also the first provisional capital of the autonomous community of Castilla y León. It was also the capital of Spain from April 1 to October 18, 1939.
It has an extensive peripheral green ring, two linear parks around the two main rivers that cross it and a large monumental complex, among which the Cathedral of Santa Maria, an example of Gothic architecture declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco , extended to the historic center in 2014, the monastery of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas and the Miraflores Charterhouse. In addition, the city is crossed by the Camino de Santiago, another World Heritage Site and is less than 15 km from the Atapuerca site, also under the protection of UNESCO since 2000. On July 13, 2010, the Museum of Human Evolution opened its doors in the city, which exposes the most important fossils found in the site. It is currently among the ten most visited museums in the country.
The city underwent a strong industrialization during the twentieth century, mainly around the automobile and food sectors, both by local entrepreneurs and foreign investments, favored by the implementation of the Development Pole during the Franco regime. Its privileged geographical location, approximately in the center of the northern peninsular half, has allowed it to become an important communications hub in northern Spain, both national and international routes.
It has a diverse educational offer led by the University of Burgos, which has more than 7,000 students, which stands out for its research quality and its relationship with the business world . It houses the headquarters of the Superior Court of Justice of Castilla y León and the Instituto Castellano y Leonés de la Lengua.
Burgos is host to several international events, such as the iRedes social networks congress, and national events such as the ForoBurgos conference, around the economic and business sector, or the Fashion Show of Castilla y León.
In recent years, the city has been immersed in various projects, such as the total urbanization of the Boulevard of the Railway, which, with about 12 km in length, is one of the longest avenues in Europe, crossing much of the city of this to the west following the redeveloped layout of the eliminated train tracks.
Burgos was the Spanish capital of gastronomy in 2013.
