St. George's Square (Cáceres)

The Plaza de San Jorge located in the heart of the walled enclosure of Cáceres, is framed by the church of San Francisco Javier, the house of the Becerra, a group of tourist shops and the tower of the Palace of the Golfines de Abajo.

On the stairs leading up to the church, a mounted figure of St. George, patron of the city, is finished in a niche, killing the dragon. The bronze sculpture is the work of José Rodríguez.
Vasari has guided subsequent interpretations. The analysis formulated by H.W. Janson with respect to the San Jorge is not something fortuitous. According to Janson, his expression corresponds more to David's victorious figure than that of a holy dragon slayer. In this way, he would occupy a place in the biblical hero's iconography "between the previous version of Donatello himself and the famous giant of Michelangelo." A metamorphosis of another sculpture of the same style that represents a David has been recognized in San Jorge. (...)

The Gothic church was built during the thirteenth century although it underwent major reforms in the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth centuries and was not fully completed until the eighteenth. In turn in the mid-twentieth century was restored recovering largely its original style.
In the temple it is characterized by having a nave covered with a ribbed vault with third rings. The apse is covered with ogival ribbed vaults. The church is located on the outskirts of the walled enclosure and in ancient times it was the point where ranchers and shepherds held their livestock fairs, which created a settlement in their surroundings and resulted in it being popularly known as San Juan de los Ovejeros .
