The municipal capital is the town of Candelaria, located 2 meters above sea level.
The municipality is home to the Virgin of Candelaria, patron general of the Canary Islands, so it is also called Villa Mariana de Candelaria. It is considered as the sacred place and pilgrimage par excellence of the archipelago. Every February 2 and August 14 and 15 thousands of pilgrims from all the islands arrive at Villa Mariana to celebrate the feast of the patron in the call «Walk to Candelaria».
The municipality has a great importance not only religious, but also historical, because in it the Guanche and Castilian cultures were united around the image of the Virgin.

Achbinico Cave
The Cave of Achbinico or San Blas is a Catholic sanctuary located in the municipality of Candelaria, on the island of Tenerife - Canary Islands, Spain.
It has a great historical significance and archaeological importance for being the place where the Guanches, first settlers of Tenerife, revered the image of the Virgin of Candelaria before the European conquest, as well as being the first Christian temple of the Güímar valley after the definitive incorporation of the island to the Crown of Castile at the end of the fifteenth century.
The cave-hermitage has been included since 2005 in the protection environment of the Cultural Interest of the Sanctuary of Candelaria.

Patron Square of the Canary Islands
The Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias is a large square located in the main Marian center of the Canary Islands (Villa Mariana de Candelaria) on the island of Tenerife, (Spain). It is next to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Candelaria (Patroness of the Canary Islands) and is the meeting place for pilgrims and celebrations of the most important festivities of the municipality.
The Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias has the category of "Insular Interest Square", given by the Cabildo de Tenerife at the end of the nineties, next to the Plaza de España (in the capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife) and the Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna (in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna).

Basilica of Our Lady of the Candelaria
The Basilica and Royal Shrine Mariano de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria is the first Marian temple of the Canarian Archipelago. This basilica is located in the municipality of Candelaria on the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain ). It is located 20 kilometers south of the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The basilica is dedicated to Our Lady the Virgin of the Candelaria (Patroness of the Canary Islands) whose original image was found in 1390 by two Guanche aboriginal shepherds. The Basilica of Candelaria was built in the place where the Guanches venerated the Virgin after the conquest (the Achbinico Cave) located behind the sanctuary. Today, the basilica is one of the main Marian and pilgrimage sanctuaries in Spain.
Every February 2 and August 15 this basilica welcomes the thousands of pilgrims who arrive at the Villa Mariana, to venerate the Virgin of Candelaria on the days of their festival. The Basilica of Candelaria has the category of Cultural Interest, declared as such by the Government of the Canary Islands and is the work of the architect José Enrique Marrero Regalado.
The height conferred by its 45-meter bell tower makes it a dominant feature on the horizon of the Villa Mariana de Candelaria and its surroundings. The Basilica of Candelaria is one of the greatest examples of neoclassical architecture in Spain. Next to the basilica and attached to it is the Royal Convent of Our Lady of the Candelaria, run by the Order of the Dominicans, religious order in charge of the sanctuary, in it is the Museum of Sacred Art. Apart from the image of the Virgin, another prominent element of the interior of the basilica is its wall paintings. Also famous are the sculptures of the nine menceyes of Tenerife, located in the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias next to the basilica.
