Cartagena (Spain)

Cartagena is a city and municipality of Spain, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in the autonomous community of the Region of Murcia. The city, capital of the region of Campo de Cartagena and the Maritime Province of Cartagena, is the seat of the autonomous parliament of the Region of Murcia, the Regional Assembly of Murcia, legislative body of the autonomous community. It has a population of 213 943 inhabitants (INE, 2018) spread over a municipality of 558.08 km². It is located south of the Campo de Cartagena plain, a natural region that forms its metropolitan area and has a population of 409,586 inhabitants. Thus, it occupies the 22nd place in the list of most populated municipalities in Spain and 26th in the list of metropolitan areas of Spain.
The city of Cartagena was founded as Qart Hadasht by the Carthaginian Asdrúbal el Bello in the year 227 a. C., on a former Iberian or Tartessian settlement, traditionally identified as Mastia. The city became known during Roman times, with the name of Carthago Nova, at which time it was the provincial capital after the Diocletian administrative division. After the disappearance of the Roman Empire, Cartagena, with the name of Carthago Spartaria, was part of the Byzantine domains in the Iberian Peninsula, of which it was one of its most important cities and perhaps its capital, being destroyed after its capture by the Visigoths . After that, Cartagena entered a period of decline that was not reversed until well into the modern age. From the 16th century the military role of Cartagena was enhanced due to the strategic importance of its port, and in the 18th century it became the capital of the Mediterranean Maritime Department. In the nineteenth century, included in the Region of Murcia since 1833, he lived the vicissitudes of the Spanish liberal system with episodes such as the insurrection of 1844 or the cantonal rebellion of 1873.
Since the late nineteenth century, and during the twentieth century, the economy of Cartagena was based on the exploitation of zinc, silver and lead from the mining sierra, whose prosperity was manifested with the construction of modernist buildings, and also in the exploitation of the sector chemical (sulfur, phosphate fertilizers and explosives). At the present time, the mining reefs are exhausted, Cartagena lives mainly from shipbuilding and naval repair, oil refining and the export of olive oil, fruits, citrus fruits, vegetables, esparto, wine and metal products. Likewise, it is one of the main naval bases of the country, together with Rota and Ferrol, and an emerging tourist destination thanks to its historical-artistic heritage, which includes vestiges of the Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine era, military-era buildings modern and contemporary, as well as with neoclassical and modernist buildings. In the cultural field, it is known for its major Carthaginian and Roman festivals and the Holy Week processions, both being declared of International Tourist Interest.

Cartagena Casino

The Casino de Cartagena is a private institution established in the first half of the 19th century in the city of Cartagena (Murcia) Spain. Similar to the casinos and cultural circles that proliferated in those years.
Traditionally integrated by partners of the so-called "good society", it has opened in recent decades to the incorporation of people of all social levels interested in cultural and recreational activities.
The Cartagena Casino periodically develops activity programs for its members, such as conferences, concerts, exhibitions, as well as other more recreational ones, such as board games, billiards, or fencing. Part of these activities are offered open to the general public.
From a few years after its foundation (the first references date from 1836) the Casino de Cartagena (initially named as Cartagenero Circle) established its headquarters, first as a tenant in 1853, and then as owner in 1890, in the former palace of the eighteenth century of the Marquis de Casa Tilly, which was renovated at the end of the 19th century to adapt it to its activities.
In 1762 Francisco Javier Everardo-Tilly, I Marqués de Casa Tilly, then Captain de Navío, bought a Palace House from the Count of Fernán Nuñez, on whose plot and other adjoining buildings he ordered to build his palace house (signed an agreement with the master of works Antonio Barea) in line with the high social class to which he belonged. A large stately mansion was built on Main Street. To do this, he acquired two adjoining large houses, as well as two smaller ones and a warehouse, for which he had to pay 100,000 reais. Several artisans from Cartagena formed a company to carry out the new work: "... that the marquis of Casa Tilly, captain of the Royal Navy, wants to do in his house on Calle Mayor."
After the death in 1830 of Pascuala Everardo-Tilly y Panés, II Marquise de Casa Tilly, widow of the Captain General of the Navy Francisco de Borja y Poyo, the palace was occupied by his only granddaughter María Dolores de Borja and Fernández Buenache, Marquesa de Camachos, along with her husband Pedro Rosique and Hernández, until the end of 1836 who, due to the confiscation, extinguished her office as Regidor de Cartagena and moved to Murcia.
The Cartagena Casino company was established on a rental basis in the Marquis Palace of Casa Tilly on August 1, 1853 under the name of Cartagenero Circle Casino.
The deed of sale of the building granted in 1886 by the Marquis de Camachos in favor of Francisco Martínez Hernández is preserved. The following year, in 1887, the latter granted lease deed and promise of sale to Ricardo Spottorno on behalf of the Cartagena Casino Recreation Society.

On January 21, 1999, it was declared of Cultural Interest in the category of monument.

Cartagena Mercy House

The Casa de Misericordia de Cartagena is a modernist construction of the architect Víctor Beltrí completed in 1929.
The Casa de Misericordia was a charitable city council dedicated to the care of homeless children. He settled in the confiscated convent of San Diego around 1839. In 1923 the construction of a new building was decided and in 1929 the work was commissioned to the architect, now old, Víctor Beltrí.
An unfortunate intervention in the 1980s completely disfigured the appearance of the courtyard and its main entrance was isolated in the middle of San Diego Street. In 1998 a controversial action took place whereby the municipal government of Mayor Pilar Barreiro demolished the neo-Gothic chapel attached to the building against the criteria of the Regional Ministry of Culture, which had ordered its conservation.
At present, the building is restored and is the seat of the rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.

Master's House

The Maestre house is a building in the city of Cartagena. With plans by the architect Marceliano Coquillat, it was built by the architect Víctor Beltrí in the Plaza de San Francisco de Cartagena, in 1906 for José Maestre Pérez and his family, owners of rich farms in the Sierra mining of Cartagena-La Unión. During the Civil War of 1936-1939 and until the Franco victory, the house was expropriated and converted into the headquarters of the Communist Party.
It is a building of a style very similar to others of Catalan modernism, such as the Calvet house by Antonio Gaudí or the Juncosa house by Salvador Vinyals, both located in Barcelona.
The facade is made of stone and is marked by its central axis, as well as by the ternary rhythm of its elements. Stresses the curvilinear viewpoint in the central part, also of stone, and the main door of the Neorrococo style.
It was acquired by a banking institution that emptied its interior, except a room on the first floor, the skylights and the original staircase, the facade is preserved.

Llagostera House

Casa Llagostera is located on the main street of Cartagena. It belonged to Esteban Llagostera, a member of a family of Catalan merchants dedicated to the textile industry, based in Cartagena and counted among the Cartagenera bourgeoisie of the early twentieth century.
The construction of this building was commissioned by the Llagostera to the architect Víctor Beltrí, who had already done some work on another building they owned. The project was carried out between 1913 and 1916, and consisted of a three-storey building whose lower part was dedicated to the family business, with the rest of the building destined for housing. The facade, which was defined by Pérez Rojas (1986) as "the most original and beautiful of Murcian architecture of the twentieth century", is composed as a support for ceramic decoration, reducing in its construction to the Cartagena scheme to base of central balconies and side viewpoints and in modernist style. The ceramic work was done by Gaspar Polo and reproduces the allegorical figures of Minerva and Mercury and the shields of Cartagena, Murcia, Barcelona and Manlleu.
In 2010 it was the subject of a demolition in which only the original facade was respected, in what was considered by Pérez Yelo and Rodríguez Martín (2016) as “one of the greatest losses” in terms of residential architectural heritage in Cartagena. Until then, almost all of its interiors had been preserved, to highlight the pavements of artistic motifs and the tile baseboards, demolished to make way for the construction of new homes. In the course of the works, in October 2016, the port structures of the ancient Roman colony of Carthage Nova, dating from the 1st century BC, emerged on its foundations. C.

Basilica of Charity (Cartagena)

The Royal Basilica of Our Lady of Charity is a Catholic temple of neoclassical style and metal structure located in the Spanish city of Cartagena, in the Region of Murcia. Its interior, dominated by the dome, reminds of many spaces of the same artistic tendency, based in turn on the Pantheon of Agrippa.
It is the seat of the patron saint of the city, the Virgen de la Caridad, represented within the church by a Neapolitan image from the 18th century. There are also several sculptures by Francisco Salzillo and his school, such as the crucified Christ, the rococo altarpiece of the communion chapel as well as the set of the Virgen de las Ánimas, in the same style, and the canvases painted by Manuel Ussel de Guimbarda in 1893
