The Fadri

El Fadrí is a bell tower in the city of Castellón de la Plana, Spain. It is municipal property and is characterized because it is separated from the cathedral, unlike other bell towers that are integrated into the same ecclesiastical building. Located in the Plaza Mayor, in the center of the city, next to the church of Santa María and the town hall. His name comes to him for the same reason: fadri means "single" in Valencian, referring to being alone and separated from the cathedral.
It is a building made in Valencian Gothic style, octagonal, with four bodies that correspond to the clock chamber, the prison, the bell house and the bell chamber (it has eight dump bells and three fixed ones located in the spire to indicate the rooms and hours). Finally we find a terrace topped by a temple. Inside there is a narrow spiral staircase that allows access to each of the floors. Its height is about 58 meters.
His works began in 1440. In 1457 Master Saera intervened building approximately the first body. After a long stoppage and several proposals in 1593, the Francisco Galiança de la Lancha, Guillem del Rei, Pedro Crosali, Marc Volsanys, Antonio and Joan Saura tower intervened and finished; according to the traces presented by the Portuguese Damián Méndez in 1591.
The Fadrí is currently the symbol of the City of Castellón.

Co-cathedral of Santa María (Castellón)

The co-cathedral of Santa María, also called the church of Santa María la Mayor in Castellón de la Plana (Spain) is a Valencian Gothic style temple with subsequent historicist interventions and in neo-Gothic style. It is located in the Plaza Mayor, next to the Town Hall and the independent bell tower known as El Fadrí.
The construction of the temple begins at the end of the 13th century. Destroyed by a fire, the works are resumed in the mid-fourteenth century, being expanded in the early fifteenth century by the master of works Miguel García de Segorbe, and the temple was consecrated in 1549.
The plant was of a single ship divided into five sections, pentagonal apse with two lateral chapels and a central for the choir, as well as chapels between the buttresses, covering with cross vaults on the sections and with a starry vault on the apse.
The temple had three covers: two lateral ones, located in the third section of the ship, and another in the main facade, being these together with some keys, the only elements conserved in its reconstruction.
In 1662, with traces of Juan Ibáñez, the chapel of the Communion of the Greek cross plan and covered with a dome in the center and vaults of half-barrel in arms, which opened in the section of the feet on the side of the Epistle, was built .
The co-cathedral of Santa María, declared in 1931 National Historic-Artistic Monument, was set on fire on July 24, 1936 in the early days of the Civil War and demolished months later by a municipal agreement. Its reconstruction, begun in 1939 from a project by Vicente Traver Tomás based on the traces of the disappeared temple, ended in 1999.

The current temple that occupies a complete block has a Latin cross plan with three naves and a pentagonal apse. The central nave is highlighted with octagonal pillars, from which the fajones arches start. The ships are covered with a ribbed vault, the one with the half-star header and the cruise, with dome, also covers with a starry vault.
