newFrigiliana Castle
The castle of Frigiliana or Lízar is a ruined castle located on the hill of Sabina, in the Malaga town of Frigiliana (Spain). The remains of the foundations, a wall and part of the access ramp remain.
It is a castle of Arab origin built between the 9th and 11th centuries. After Granada was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1485, the rebels in the area of Malaga and Granada were concentrated in Frigiliana. After the battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in the Moorish revolt in the Alpujarras, the fortress was destroyed in 1569 by order of the Major Commander of Castile, Luis de Requesens, who had conquered the castle and the city. Part of the castle ashlars were used to build the palace of the Manrique de Lara.
It had an approximate surface of 4000 m2 and water supply thanks to a ditch fed by an aqueduct.
It has the protection of the generic Declaration of the Decree of April 22, 1949, and Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage.
