newChurch of San Salvador (Getaria)
The church of San Salvador (Salbatore Parroki Eliza) in Guetaria (province of Guipúzcoa, Spain) is a Gothic style building that is declared a National Monument. It dates from at least the fourteenth century, although most of it was built between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries and had to undergo numerous repairs during the nineteenth century because of the damage it suffered in the Carlist Wars.
In this church the first General Meetings of Guipúzcoa were held in 1397.
The temple consists of three ships, divided into three sections each. The presbytery is elevated. They call attention to the different levels, which obey the layout of the land. A splendid triforium surrounds the temple. It is openwork inside. The vaults are ogival, very slender.
The entire building is built in sandstone masonry, with two doors and two towers. One of them topped, that of the North, known as the Tower of the Inquisition is the oldest.
Juan Sebastián Elcano was probably baptized in this church.
The current tower consists of 6 bodies. It was designed by Pedro de Alzaga. Construction began in 1525, ending in 1755. Five years later the upper part was destroyed by lightning.
Under the apse, is the Katrapona Passage that connects the old town with the fishing port.
