In total, the area of the sandy area amounts to 40,000 square meters at high tide and 240,000 at low tide.

Gigia (Asturias)

"Gigia" redirects here. For the pre-Roman nucleus of the same name in the province of León, see Gigia (León).

Gigia is the name of an ancient Roman city founded on the hill of Santa Catalina, promontory overlooking the Bay of Gijón (Asturias, Spain), and presumably named.
At that time it was a safe place, since when the tide rose the peninsula became an island, apart from being surrounded by a wall. A defensive environment that had already been used by the Celts, who built a castro on the hill of "Cimadevilla" that lasted until the arrival of the Romans.
It was a maritime city that exported fishery products as well as wines, ceramics and oils that arrived in ships from southern Galias and the Mediterranean. It is assumed that the main activity of the city was the elaboration of a very popular culinary sauce in the Empire, the garum, made with wine, fish and salt (from the salt flats near Gigia).
They highlighted its thermal baths, or public baths, whose remains are preserved today and can be visited, and the Roman Villa de Veranes, which can also be visited.

Asturias Railway Museum

The Railway Museum of Asturias is a large museum complex located in the Asturian city of Gijón (Spain), in the Natahoyo neighborhood, next to Poniente beach, considered one of the most important museums in Europe of its kind. The museum occupies part of the former Gijón North Station and was inaugurated on October 22, 1998, with the presence of the then Prince of Asturias, Felipe de Borbón.
The Museum has temporary exhibition halls, its own documentation center (with library, newspaper library, documentary archive and image archive), activity rooms, workshops for schoolchildren, shop and facilities for people with reduced mobility. Several times a year, the steam locomotives that it keeps in operational state are turned on for display, in the so-called Steam Days.
In its extensive facilities of more than 14,000 m², formed by the old Renfe station, the so-called beach of tracks and two new buildings, it keeps one of the largest and best preserved collections of railroad machines and wagons of the European continent.
A large set of steam locomotives of different railways stands out, such as the Langreo Railway, the third railway line built in Spain (after Barcelona to Mataró and Madrid to Aranjuez) that linked the Asturian councils of Langreo and Gijón. The collection also has locomotives of the Northern Railways, Basque Asturian and many mining lines and industries. It also retains passenger cars, wagons, trams and other objects and supplies linked to trains and railways.
Initially, these railroads were born to meet mining interests, and the lines originated in a simple expansion of those created internally to meet the needs of factories and mines.
This explains that different track widths will be used, as well as the lack of connection between the different lines, only achieved with the creation of FEVE and integration in RENFE of the Iberian width paths.
A sample of the railway companies that have operated in Asturias and that are represented in the museum are the following:

International track width
Langreo Railroad Broadband Companies
Northwest Railroad Company [León-Gijón]
Asturias, Galicia and León Railroad Company
Company of the Iron Roads of Northern Spain
National Network of Spanish Railways (RENFE) Metric companies
Company of the Economic Railways of Asturias (Oviedo-Oriente)
General Society of Basque Asturian Railways
Carreño Railroad Company [Aboño]
Ferrol-Gijón Strategic Railway
Narrow Railways (FEVE)

Magnus Blikstad Street

Magnus Blikstad Street is a street in Gijón, in the Spanish autonomous community of Asturias. It passes between the Plaza del Humedal and Avenida de la Constitución and its zip code is 33207.
The street name refers to Magnus Blikstad and Hauff, Norwegian philanthropist benefactor of local institutions such as the Athenaeum - Casino Obrero, to whose foundation in 1881 he contributed and who placed a plaque with his name in 1919 that is still preserved on one side of the building of the Drop of Milk after being removed during the Spanish Civil War. Named Adoptive Son of Gijón, he died in 1926 in his native country.
The municipal agreement that gave its current name to Magnus Blikstad Street dates from December 18, 1909. Previously, the road received the names of Bishop's Road and Wetland Road.
Representative buildings of this street are the Station for Automobiles de Luarca, S.A. (ALSA) and the Drop of Milk. The first was projected in 1939 by Del Busto, architects representing a current called "consumer rationalism." The building combines straight and curved planes with staggered cornices on the pediment, in which there is also a neon sign, presided over by a sober clock tower. La Gota de Leche, popular name of the Casa del Niño or Institute of Childcare of Gijón, was built between 1922 and 1924 according to plans by Miguel García de la Cruz. It is a regionalist construction, inspired by the typical mountain family house with tower, wide eaves and garden.
