Jaen
Jaén is a city and Spanish municipality of the autonomous community of Andalusia, capital of the homonymous province. It holds the title of "Very Noble and Very Loyal City of Jaén, Guardian and Defense of the Kingdoms of Castile" and is known as the "capital of the Holy Kingdom." In 2018 it has a population of 113 457 inhabitants according to the INE, 54 533 men and 58 924 women, which is approximately one sixth of the population of the entire province. The city is framed within the metropolitan area of Jaén of which it is head, and absorbs a third of the total population of the province of Jaén. Its area is 424.30 km². It is also the seat of the judicial party number 1 of the province and of the homonymous diocese.
It stands at the foot of the hill of Santa Catalina, with steep streets and steep slopes that define its urbanism, widening towards the flatter and wider areas of the new neighborhoods and boulevards. In its surroundings fertile farmland abounds, and extensive olive groves that cover much of its term. To the south and southeast are the mountains of Jaén and Jabalcuz, and to the north the plain of the Guadalbullón River opens, which passes a very short distance from the city.
Due to its situation, Jaén has had great strategic importance, having found in its urban nucleus several of the oldest human settlements in Europe. Similarly, it had great importance in the history of al-Andalus and the Kingdom from Castilla.
The most important economic activity in the province of Jaén is the production of olive oil, being the largest producer in the world, which is evident under the motto that the city receives, as "World Capital of Olive Oil". In this regard, the city has been hosting, since 1983, Expoliva, a worldwide international reference fair dedicated to the olive oil and related industries sector, currently held at the Jaén Fair Institution. However, The economy is also based on the services sector, administration, agricultural and food industry, construction, and an incipient cultural tourism.
Among its historical-artistic heritage, it is worth noting the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, the castle with its three fortresses, the Arab Baths and the emblematic Monument to Battles, located in the central Plaza de las Batallas, which commemorates the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa and the Battle of Bailén, both in the province of Jaén.
The most representative popular festivals of Jaén are the "Lumbres de San Antón", which are celebrated on the night of January 16 to 17. During that night the International Urban Race Night of San Antón runs. In October the San Lucas fair is celebrated. Its origin dates from the fourteenth century, being its big day on October 18. Special mention is the Holy Week in Jaén, declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest, the procession of "El Abuelo" having great expectation, during the early hours of Good Friday.
At present, some projects to be carried out in the city are the completion of the tram system and the suburbs of the metropolitan area, the International Museum of Iberian Art, the construction of the necessary infrastructure for the rail connection with AVE trains or the restoration of the Convent of Santo Sunday.
Jaén is an immense mountain of leones. The sun, biting it, has given it a bistre tone on which the old Arab walls highlight its capricious lines.
