Murcia

Murcia is a Spanish city, capital of the municipality of the same name and the autonomous community of the Region of Murcia. It is the center of the region of the Huerta de Murcia and its metropolitan area. It is located in the southeast of the Iberian peninsula on the banks of the Segura River, in the so-called Murcia pre-coastal depression, 40 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. With 447 182 inhabitants (INE, 2018), Murcia is the seventh most populous municipality in Spain.
The urban area of the city (or metropolitan area), although not officially established, would comprise about ten municipalities in the Region of Murcia, with a population of 650,468 inhabitants in 2018, spread over a total area of 1,230.92 km2, with a population density of 528 inhabitants / km2. Thus, the urban area of Murcia would occupy 10th place in the list of metropolitan areas in Spain.
Murcia is an important municipality of services in which the tertiary sector has succeeded its former status as an agricultural exporter par excellence, thanks to its famous and fertile garden, for which it was known by the nickname of the Huerta de Europa. Among its most prominent industries are food, textiles, chemistry, distillation and the manufacture of furniture and construction materials, many of them located in the West Industrial Estate, considered one of the largest in the peninsula [ 6] (shared with the municipality of Alcantarilla).
It is also an important center of great university tradition since the first university was founded in 1272. It is currently home to two universities: the public University of Murcia and the private San Antonio Catholic University, which attract around 50,000 students to municipality.
Of uncertain origins, there is evidence that it was founded in 825 with the name of Madīnat Mursiya (مدينة مرسيّة in Arabic) by order of Abderramán II, probably, on a previous settlement of Roman origin. During the Middle Ages , Murcia became the capital of the Tudmir cora, later it was head of different taifa kingdoms of increasing importance in the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries and between 1243-1266 he joined the Crown of Castile as capital of the Kingdom of Murcia, being also a city with a vote in courts and episcopal headquarters since 1291.
Of its historical-artistic heritage, its famous Cathedral stands out, with a Baroque facade and mainly Gothic interior, the famous Casino, with sumptuous interiors; the dense sculptural heritage of Francisco Salzillo, and a large set of baroque buildings. In the cultural field it is known for its rich folklore, especially colorful during the Spring Festival and Holy Week processions, declared of International Tourist Interest. The Council of Good Men of the Huerta de Murcia, example of customary court of irrigators of the Spanish Mediterranean, it is declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.

Murcia Cathedral

The Holy Cathedral Church of Santa Maria, known as Murcia Cathedral, is the main temple and seat of the Diocese of Cartagena. It is located in the old town of Murcia, in the Plaza del Cardenal Belluga.
Consecrated in 1467, it underwent several additions (such as the bell tower) or specific reforms (new chapels or facades) mainly in the 16th and 18th centuries, so it integrates the original Gothic style with Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical additions.
Its architectural elements include the 93-meter-high tower that makes it the third tallest bell tower in Spain - the second if only cathedrals are included -; the main facade or imafronte, considered as a masterpiece of the Spanish baroque; and the chapels of Vélez, Junterones and Trascoro.
In the Main Chapel is the sepulchral urn where the heart and entrails of Alfonso X the Wise rest.
The Santa María Cathedral was declared a National Monument in 1931.
