The city was the only seat of the Diocese of Orihuela, created after a broad lawsuit in 1564 when segregating itself from the Diocese of Cartagena, and constituted as a suffragan of the Metropolitan of Valencia. By Bula issued by Pope John XXIII in 1968, he changed his name to that of the Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante, and the episcopal seat was shared between Orihuela and Alicante.
In Orihuela, numerous personalities have been born and lived, highlighting the illustrious poet Miguel Hernández:
If you want the enjoyment of vision so pleasant / that the mind to believe it stubbornly resists; / if you want in a beautiful waterfall / color and lights flood the view; / if you want in such wonderful areas / as in those that in dreams the high mind errs / revokes, in these miraculous verses, / contemplate my people, contemplate my land.

Its capital, in addition to its most important city historically, is Orihuela. This city, located in the plain, is part of the largest municipality in the region and is the second largest in population, with 78,778 inhabitants (INE 2018). On both sides of its mouth, the region opens to the sea, whose coastline belongs to the Costa Blanca.
The predominant language in the region is the Spanish language. In the municipality of Guardamar del Segura and in the Oriolana district of Barbarroja, Valencian is also spoken, although in a smaller proportion than Spanish.

Orihuela Cathedral
The Holy Cathedral Church of El Salvador and Santa María de Orihuela, or simply Orihuela Cathedral, is one of the cathedral headquarters of the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante, together with the co-cathedral of San Nicolás de Bari of Alicante.
Its construction began at the end of the 13th century on Visigoth and Spanish-Arab remains. In 1281, Alfonso X the Wise established that the church of El Salvador and Santa María should be the largest in the town, taking precedence over the other two parishes of Orihuela, the churches of Santas Justa and Rufina and Santiago Apóstol, granting him the superior rank of arciprestal.
Although at first, Orihuela belonged to Castile, it passed definitively to the Aragonese Crown in 1304, after the arbitration treaty of Torrellas. However, on a spiritual level he continued to depend on the Bishopric of Cartagena. This situation, in which the civil and ecclesiastical limits did not coincide and the inconveniences that this produced, gave rise to the need to segregate their territory from the Diocese of Cartagena.
The first achievement on the way to the cathedral was its elevation in 1413, by the bull of Benedict XIII, to the rank of schoolboy, a category that was necessary for a church to be promoted to the cathedral. In 1510, Pope Julius II decreed the elevation to the cathedral rank of the Collegiate Church of El Salvador, the creation of the Bishopric of Orihuela and its canonical union with that of Cartagena under the authority of a single Bishop, "sub uno pastore", according to the recommendations of Fernando the Catholic. This measure was subsequently annulled by Leo X and Clement VII, attending to the pleas of King Carlos V.
We will have to wait until 1564 when Pope Pius IV definitively separates Orihuela from the diocese of Cartagena, creating his own bishopric at the request of King Philip II, in compliance with the agreement adopted in the Monzon Courts of 1563.

Orihuela archives
The historical importance of Orihuela has made it possible for a large number of archives to be assembled in its city that now contain important documentation that contains a large part of the history of Orihuela, its old Governorate, the current province of Alicante and the old Kingdom of Valencia
The documentary set of the city has suffered significant losses due to the War of Succession, or the Civil War, which caused the loss of a large part of the archive of the Church of Santa Justa and Rufina or the Shrine of Our Lady of Monserrate. The confiscation of the Law of Confiscation Law of Minister Mendizábal, which caused numerous documentation of convents, monasteries and the University, and even the City Council, which passed to the National Historical Archive, was also a great loss of documentation.
Currently there are several archives whose ownership is public and private, highlighting among the private archives owned by the Catholic Church by the number and age of its documents. Some of the files are:
