Pamplona

Pamplona (in Basque and co-officially Iruña) is a municipality and Spanish city, capital of the Autonomous Community of Navarra.
Pamplona is located in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, and in the center of the Pamplona Basin. It extends to both banks of the Arga River and through it run two other rivers, the Elorz (tributary of the Arga) and the Sadar (tributary of the Elorz). It has a population of 199 066 inhabitants (INE, 2018) —203 382 according to the data of the municipal register— [citation needed] spread over an area of 25,098 km², according to the data of the municipal registry. Its metropolitan area reaches 334 830 inhabitants distributed over an area of 488.6 km².
Traditionally it has been believed that the city was founded in 74 a. C. by the Roman general Pompey as Pompaelo or Pompelo over a pre-existing village, of supposed Basque origin, perhaps called Bengoda, although no classical historical source collects this data; Estrabón does allude, without specifying details, that the foundation of Pamplona was the work of Pompey. The city would since then become one of the most important towns in the territory of the vascones. After the invasions of the Germanic peoples of the sixth century, the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo was established in Pamplona, but maintaining continuous campaigns against the vascones. The subsequent Muslim conquest of the Iberian peninsula of the eighth century achieved the submission of the Pamplona territory.
During the first half of the ninth century, the local nobility, with the alliance of the Banu Qasi family, achieved the consolidation of an independent power nucleus led by Íñigo Arista, which made Pamplona the capital of the Kingdom of Pamplona which, advanced the Middle Ages, will be transformed into the Kingdom of Navarra. In 1423 Carlos III of Navarra dictated the Privilege of the Union that unified the three boroughs of Pamplona in a single city. In 1512 it was occupied by the troops sent by Fernando the Catholic, with the definitive defeat in 1521, and that together with the peninsular part of the old Navarre kingdom it was annexed in the Spanish Crown. The majority of Basque nationalism also considers it the historical capital of Euskal Herria. [Citation needed]
Its historical and monumental heritage, as well as various celebrations that take place throughout the year, make it a city that receives national and international tourism. The Sanfermines stand out, of international fame, filling their streets with thousands of outsiders from all over the world. The festivities begin with the launch of the chupinazo (rocket) from the balcony of the town hall at noon on July 6, and end at twelve on the night of July 14 with the Poor of Me, a farewell song. His worldwide fame is a recent phenomenon, also linked to the dissemination that Ernest Hemingway gave them with his novel Fiesta.
Among its most representative monuments are the cathedral of Santa Maria, the church of San Saturnino, the church of San Nicolás, the Citadel or the Chamber of Comptos, all of them declared of Cultural Interest.
It is the financial and commercial center of Navarra, as well as constituting the administrative center of the community because it is the seat of the institutions of the regional administration and the territorial administration of the State. It is also an important core of industrial activity, specialized in the activities of production of construction materials, metallurgy, paper and graphic arts and processed meat. The Volkswagen car company, located in the Landaben industrial estate, is the industry that generates the most jobs in the Pamplona basin, with an approximate workforce of 5,000 workers in 2009.
It also highlights the commercial activity, both wholesale and retail. [Citation needed] The city has two universities: the Public University of Navarra and the University of Navarra, in addition to having an associated center of the National University of Distance Education (UNED ). The first, founded in 1987, had 7276 students in the 2007-08 academic year and is listed as the 28th university in Spain by number of students according to the classification of the newspaper El Mundo. The second, founded in 1952, It is privately owned and its ownership and management correspond to Opus Dei; in the 2007-08 academic year, it had 13,490 students and is listed as the 8th in Spain. In the healthcare field it has the Navarra Hospital Complex, formed by the public hospitals Hospital de Navarra and Hospital Virgen del Camino, [ 11] and several private centers, the University of Navarra Clinic standing out among the latter, also managed by Opus Dei.

Navarra Palace

The Palacio de Navarra is the building of the government headquarters of Navarra (Spain), in Pamplona, dating from the 19th century. It was the initial seat of the Diputación de Navarra.
The project was commissioned to the architect José de Nagusia and the works began in 1840. It is located in the First Ensanche of Pamplona, closing a part of the Plaza del Castillo and in turn, one of the ends of the Sarasate promenade. The land of the barefoot Carmelite convent was used after ecclesiastical confiscation.
It is of a palatial, neoclassical, powerful character that so deeply rooted in the institutional architecture of Navarra. This contributes to the strength of the sillar, the calculated dimension of the elements and their distribution, and the serene classical Doric front that gives the ride.

At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1929 José and Javier Yárnoz, once the walls had disappeared, was extended to the avenue of Carlos III, axis of the Second Ensanche, with the same style that preceded them. The sculptures and reliefs of the pediment of this rear face of the palace are by Fructuoso Orduna in 1932. It depicts Navarra and the human and artistic activities that characterized him.

Inside, the Throne Room stands out, with great majesty of the Elizabethan style made between 1861 and 1865, by the architect Maximiano Hijón who directed the work and hired all the artists who participated. It has a lavish staircase as access.
It has a garden with an illuminated fountain, and there is one of the two redwoods in Pamplona, popularly known as "Pino de la Diputación".
In 1896 Florencio Ansoleaga built on one side the provincial Archive, which has been used until the creation of the new Royal and General Archive of Navarra in the historic Palace of the Kings of Navarra.

Gayarre Theater

The Gayarre Theater is a 1932 theater that is located in Pamplona, capital of the Community of Navarra (Spain), on Carlos III avenue in the Second Ensanche.
However, the origin of the theater dates back to 1841, built as the Main Theater in the Plaza de la Constitución (now Plaza del Castillo), closing it on its south face, sharing in front of the Palace of Navarra (then Palacio de la Diputación), when the land of the barefoot Carmelite convent was seized after the confiscation. It was made by the architect Pedro Manuel Ugartemendía, with a facade of José de Nagusia, who also directed the work. This theater came to replace the old Patio and Casa de Comedias, located on the street of the same name since 1608. The Teatro Principal was named that way until 1903, when it changed its name in honor of the Roncalor tenor Julián Gayarre.
When it was decided to open the Plaza del Castillo to the south, creating Carlos III Avenue, the old theater was demolished in 1931, retaining only its facade, the most representative, and moved to the new location. This façade lost part of its architectural interest, when its classic façade disappeared, in French version (by the adintelada gallery).
The new building is a project of Javier Yárnoz, who won the contest called by the City Council of Pamplona in 1929. It is located in an irregular block to which the architect adapted. It opened its doors on May 3, 1932.
The theater is owned by Pamplona City Council. The construction company Erroz and San Martín, which built the theater requested, in December 1931, the exploitation of the colosseum and was granted. The contract lasted until 1942 and was subsequently renewed, taking over the management of the Public Limited Real Estate Company (SAIDE). In 1953, due to the need for urgent reforms, the company agreed to bear the costs and a new contract was signed that was due to end on May 3, 2003, although the municipal plenary decided its reversal five years earlier, in May 1998. At the time the Gayarre Theater Municipal Foundation was established for theater management. After the reversal, important conditioning works have been done.
The managing board of the Gayarre Theater Municipal Foundation is chaired by the mayor of Pamplona and has five members (one of them acting as Vice President), one per municipal political group or council member not attached. It is, therefore, a board formed exclusively by politicians.

Ezpeleta Palace

The Ezpeleta Palace or the Marquises de Aguayo is an 18th-century building located on the main street of the Old Town of the city of Pamplona. In 2005, it hosted the Pablo Sarasate Navarro Conservatory of Music. It is currently the headquarters of the school of educators and the school of distance languages.
The palace was built in 1709 by the stonecutter Pedro de Arriarán and the sculptor Domingo de Gaztelu for the family of Agustín de Echeverz (Marquises San Miguel de Aguayo), governor and captain general of the New Kingdom of León in the Viceroyalty of New Spain .
It is within the spirit of the Enlightenment in which Pamplona renewed its buildings, demolishing much of the hamlet of previous centuries. In this stage of great constructive activity, an urbanism with interest in the panoramic views, the views, the great squares and parks, and the scenographic disposition of the monumental complexes burst into force.
The facade is fully baroque and is composed of a large stone body with rustic cushioning, a noble brick floor with balconies and an attic topped with balconies. Stresses the large cover of Domingo Gaztelu, white stone of Olza, which in 1843 Victor Hugo described as "an eclogue adorned with cannonballs." This is due to the fact that they are allusive to the military activity - cannons, trophies and warriors - of their first owners. The siren also appears repeatedly. To its description must be added the staircase that starts from the noble entrance hall and a large backyard, which makes this building one of the most notable examples of the city's civil architecture.
In 1800, the Marquis of San Miguel de Aguayo, who lived in Mexico, sold the property to the Count of Ezpeleta, who has given it a name until today, and who placed his weapons on the front cover. Years later it became the property of the Marquis del Amparo, and from 1918 to 1999 it was a school of the Company of Santa Teresa de Jesús.
In 2004 it was renovated by Manuel Enriquez Jiménez and Javier Barco Berruezo, rescuing the architectural elements of greatest interest.
From 2005 until 2014 it was the headquarters of the Professional Conservatory of Music.
Now the Ezpeleta Palace houses the EOIDNA and the school of educators.

Pamplona Cathedral (Spain)

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa María la Real, located in the city of Pamplona (Comunidad Foral de Navarra, Spain), headquarters of the Archdiocese of Pamplona and Tudela, is a unique ecclesiastical architectural complex, as it is the most complete cathedral complex that is preserved in Spain. It presents the usual buildings in other cathedrals such as church, cloister and sacristies, but also retains the ciliary, refectory, chapter house and bedroom, which are more typical of the common life to which his council was subject and that throughout the centuries they have been demolished in other Spanish cathedrals. The rooms that make it up were built in different eras and styles, retaining today some of the Romanesque dependencies, but predominantly those built in Gothic style (including the church and the cloister) from the 14th to the 16th centuries. The western facade, in neoclassical style, was built at the end of the 18th century.
They stand out in this set of buildings; the cloister, which is considered a marvel of European Gothic art and of course the best cloister of the fourteenth century; the kitchen, which is one of the only three surviving examples of Gothic cuisine in Europe; and Finally, the main facade, one of the purest and most representative works of neoclassicism in the peninsula.

Church of San Saturnino (Pamplona)

The church of San Saturnino, more commonly called San Cernin (local variant of the French and Occitan Saint Sernin, in Euskera San Zernin Eliza or San Saturnino Eliza), is a Catholic religious building in the Old Town of the city of Pamplona, Comunidad Foral from Navarra.
The current church is 13th century gothic. However, there was a primitive church and a Romanesque church in the same location (12th century). In the Middle Ages, it served a double function: religious and defensive. Pamplona, at that time was divided into three independent boroughs, and this church was the parish of the borough of San Cernin, inhabited mainly by French. These boroughs were continually fighting, so the church towers were crowned with defensive battlements that lasted until the 18th century.
In addition to its towers, the portico stands out, decorated with beautiful Gothic carvings such as those of Santiago Pilgrim or San Saturnino, and the interior, very wide single nave gothic with sexpartite vault, polygonal headboard, chapels between buttresses and an elevated choir, and a large terraced baroque chapel, where the cloister was until the 17th century. This chapel is dedicated to the Virgen del Camino, lady of the city, and is baroque.
The bells of its tower mark the beginning of the Sanfermines.
