Roses (Gerona)

Roses
(in Catalan and officially Roses), is a Spanish municipality in the Alto Ampurdán region in the province of Girona, Catalonia.
In little more than half a century it has experienced rapid growth due to tourism, from 2,703 inhabitants (1950) to 12,991 inhabitants in 2000 and 19,896 in 2012.
It is located on the north coast of the Gulf of Rosas, south of the Cape of Creus. It is a large tourist center, with urbanizations, hotels and beaches and two ports (fishing and sports), and an attractive and highly prominent place within the northern sector of the Costa Brava. The coast of the municipality of Rosas includes a long sandy beach and a large number of coves to the east, among which are Canyelles Petites, L'Almadrava, Cape Norfeu, Punta Falconera and Montjoi.
Although tourism is the main source of the economy, the primary sector also has a presence, with agriculture (olive and vineyard cultivation), and also, although smaller, fishing, since Rosas has the most prominent fishing port of the Northern coast of Catalonia.

Monastery of Santa María de Rosas

The monastery of Santa María is an old Benedictine abbey that was inside the Roses Citadel of the Catalan town of Rosas, in the Alto Ampurdán region.
The origin of this monastery is in a church, that of Santa María de Rodes, belonging to the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. The monacal activity was repeatedly affected by attacks by Saracen pirates. In 960, the monastic community was grouped into the church of Santa María de Rosas, becoming an important abbey with the protection of Gausfredo I, count of Ampurias and Roussillon.
In 976, Gausfredo and his son Suñer, at that time bishop of the cat ...

Roses Citadel

The Citadel of Roses is the walled enclosure that formerly protected the city of Rosas (province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain), founded as a Greek colony with the name of Rode in the Gulf of Rosas (the northeastern end of the Spanish coast). Despite the phonetic similarity, the identification of that name with that of the Greek island of Rhodes, nor the rhodium condition of the Greeks who founded this colony is not demonstrated. Nor is the time of its foundation, which literary sources place in the eighth century BC. C., while archaeological sources link with the nearby Emporion (Ampurias) not ...
