San Roque (Cádiz)
The city of San Roque, whose full name, is the one of Very noble and most loyal city of San Roque, where the one of Gibraltar resides, is a Spanish municipality located in the area of the Strait of Gibraltar, that is, in the southeast corner of the province of Cádiz, in the autonomous community of Andalucía. It belongs to the region of Campo de Gibraltar and its commonwealth of municipalities. With a population of 30,516 inhabitants, it is the third city of its region, member of the metropolitan area of the Bay of Algeciras, and eleventh of the province.
The Christian reconquest of the region of Campo de Gibraltar led to the urban centers of the region being completely depopulated. The only exception was the city of Gibraltar which, by conserving its population, becomes the nerve, economic and administrative center of the region. The conquest of the Rock in 1704 by British troops during the war of Spanish succession causes the expulsion of the Spanish population residing in Gibraltar. Waiting for a prompt return, the Spanish population went into exile near the Rock, in the former settlements of the Campo de Gibraltar that the Arabs had abandoned after the Reconquest. The exiles refounded most of the towns and cities that currently form the region including, for example, San Roque. They also refounded Algeciras, taking there the image of Our Lady of Europe, which was in the chapel of Punta Europa in Gibraltar.
However, the most important part of the Gibraltarian population expelled in 1704 by British troops settled and founded the current city of San Roque, near the rock. To San Roque he transported the exiled Spanish population, the official archives of the city of Gibraltar and the other Spanish documents that had the rock, as well as the part of the historical heritage that could be rescued, and that still remain there. From that moment, the settlement of Spanish exiles that founded the city of San Roque became officially considered as the city of Gibraltar in exile or textually and according to the motto of San Roque, "the city where the city of Gibraltar resides."
San Roque retains all the symbols and titles enjoyed by Gibraltar during the Spanish presence. As you can see, the flag that San Roque uses since its foundation in 1706 and the one that Gibraltar currently uses are identical, with the only difference from the Spanish crown, which does not appear on the Gibraltarian flag.
The main nucleus of the municipality, known as San Roque Centro or urban center, is located in the center of the Bay of Algeciras and concentrates approximately 40% of the population of the municipality. The rest of the residents of San Roque live in a dozen neighborhoods (districts) spread throughout the municipality.
The economy of San Roque is based on the chemical, oil and energy industry, belonging to the municipality the most important industrial estate in Andalusia, which includes the Gibraltar-San Roque refinery and a combined cycle power plant. [7 ] The industrial sector is complemented by tourism, especially the high level, focused on the luxury urbanization Sotogrande and the Valderrama golf course, home of major European and world championships, such as the 1997 Ryder Cup.
