Saint Sebastian

San Sebastián (in Basque Donostia, and officially Donostia / San Sebastián) is a Spanish city and municipality located on the coast of the Bay of Biscay and 20 kilometers from the border with France. The city is the capital of the province of Guipúzcoa, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country. The population of the municipality is 186 665 inhabitants (2018), and its metropolitan area reaches 436,500 (2010). It is the head of the Basque City Bayonne-San Sebastián Eurocity, a conurbation of more than 620,000 inhabitants.
Its main economic activities are commerce and tourism, constituting in the past one of the most famous tourist destinations in Spain. Its landscape, dominated by the bay of La Concha, as well as its modern architectural development initiated in the second half of the nineteenth century, which shaped a city of French and bourgeois court, led to the development of tourism activity at European level. All this, together with international events such as the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the San Sebastián Jazz Festival, the Musical Fortnight or the Horror Film Festival, has given external projection to the city, despite its small dimensions . San Sebastián was the European Capital of Culture in 2016 together with Wrocław, Poland.

San Telmo Museum

The San Telmo Museum (in Basque, San Telmo Museoa or STM) is the municipal museum of the city of San Sebastián (Spain), dedicated to illustrating the evolution of Basque society, mostly through pieces of ethnography and Fine Arts . It opened at its current headquarters in 1932, although it had been founded thirty years earlier, in 1902, making it the oldest museum in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. After a prolonged controversy over his profile and future functions, he was subjected to an ambitious work of extension and reform (2007-2010) that opened in the spring of 2011.
The museum is consolidating its influx of public in recent years, and in 2015 it slightly exceeded 122,000 visits. Good proof of the variety and interest of its collections is that it annually provides between 60 and 200 pieces for national and international exhibitions.

Cristina Enea

Cristina Enea is an urban park in the city of San Sebastián (Guipúzcoa, Spain). With an area of 94,960 m², is considered one of the most interesting urban historical parks in Spain, following the type of English garden.
It is located in the neighborhood of Eguía, in a small mound surrounded by the final meander of the Urumea river. Her name comes from Cristina Brunetti and Gayoso de los Cobos, XIII Duchess of Mandas, married to Fermín de Lasala and Collado, an important businessman and politician from San Sebastian, best known for his wife's noble title.
This park was conceived by the Duke of Mandas, who, at his death, donated the same to the City Council, being some of the conditions that were not built in it, nor was the park used for any use other than this and that will keep the name of Cristina Enea. In 2007, some renovation works were completed, thanks to which accessibility was improved and a new range of trees and shrubs brought from Belgium and Germany was planted in order to enrich their biodiversity. These works were criticized by various groups for modifying elements such as the pond and modifying the lining of the roads.
Inside the park, at the top, is the Palace of the Duke of Mandas, former residence of the same. After the renovation works, it was converted into an Environmental Resources Center, an ecological laboratory and an environmental training center. The substantial reform of the facades of the palace, as well as its partial interior reform, also sparked a certain controversy. In January 2008, the creation of the Cristina Enea Foundation was reported, approved by the city council plenary on the 29th, with headquarters in the Palace.
In the 2000s, a pedestrian walkway was opened between the river, next to the Mundaiz bridge, and the park, on the train tracks, as well as stairs and an elevator to bridge the gap between the river and the mound surrounded by the park. This gateway received the name of Gladys del Estal, in memory of an ecologist from the neighborhood killed by the police during an anti-nuclear demonstration in Tudela (Navarra): the park is also popularly known as Gladys. Years later, in 2009, another gateway was opened between the park and the new neighborhood of Riberas de Loiola, in this case on the river, which was given the name of singer Mikel Laboa. These two catwalks supposed a noticeable increase in the transit of people through the park.

San Sebastian Harbor

The port of San Sebastián is located within the municipality of San Sebastián, forming part of the Concha Bay, south of Urgull. Its modern construction began in the second half of the s. XV d. C.
Throughout the 18th century d. C. there were several projects to improve the port promoted by the Consulate of San Sebastián, which in addition to new docks came to propose the closure of the western mouth of the bay, an idea already proposed by the Villa in the seventeenth century d. C .. None of them got to run.
In the 19th century AD C. the architect Silvestre Pérez (1821) began the works for the closure of the western mouth of the bay. In the mid-19th century AD C., the port of San Sebastian doubled its capacity thanks to the construction of a new dock (1851-1858); there was the new dock equipped with floodgates - years later suppressed - that allowed the maintenance of the water level at low tide. Later the old Kaierdi was suppressed and, later, the so-called Eskalleta or stepped sector that attracts attention in the old photographs in front of the so-called Barrio de la Jarana.
Throughout the 20th century d. C. several slight modifications were made. Among them, the cut-out of Kaimingancho (1943) stands out, placing on the section that there was a concrete platform secured by piles in order to form an esplanade on which a tinglado ("aircraft carrier") was built. The last one, dating from the 1980s, consisted of a new slight cut from Kaiburu.
Currently, the port of San Sebastián has two docks: a fishing and a sports one. The sports dock has little capacity, with the sports fleet forced to anchor in the bay of La Concha during the summer. This is the dock designed by Peironcely in the mid-19th century AD. C. and the one that for more than a hundred years hosted commercial traffic (wood and cement in recent times), ceasing to function as such in the 1970s.
Managed for years by the Center of Attraction and Tourism, in the 1990s it was transferred to a Public Limited Company called Puerto Deportivo de Donostia-San Sebastián, in which the Basque Government and the City of San Sebastián participate equally.
The possibility of expanding the marina is practically nil, which is why a preliminary draft was drafted in the 1990s for the construction of a new marina between the tip of Monpás and Zurriola Beach, which did not run.

Basilica of Santa Maria del Coro

The basilica of Santa María del Coro (in Basque, Koruko Andre Mariaren basilika) is a Baroque basilica completed in 1774 and located at the crossroads of the 31st of August and Greater streets of the "Old Town" of San Sebastián (Guipúzcoa) . Baroque style, however, has gothic, churrigueresque and neoclassical elements and has a beautiful Baroque porch with Rococo elements. Its facade and main entrance are aligned with the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, creating an axis formed by the continuation of the main street, converted after the Boulevard in Hernani street and, later, Loyola street.
The construction works began in 1743 from the project of the architects Pedro Ignacio Lizardi and Miguel de Salazar, building on an old Gothic church of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, whose plan and orientation was preserved.
View of the basilica from the outside, it is important to highlight the main doorway, located between the two towers as an altarpiece, and on which we can see the martyred figure of San Sebastián, the papal symbols that give it the status of minor basilica and the City shield crowning the building.
