University of Santiago de Compostela

The University of Santiago de Compostela (in Galician and officially University of Santiago de Compostela - USC) is a public university based in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia (Spain), and campus in Santiago de Compostela and Lugo.
It was founded in 1495 by Lope Gómez de Marzoa and is, with its more than 500 years, the longest tradition university in Galicia, and one of the oldest in the world.
Since its inception, the University enjoyed an important cultural and economic impulse under the archbishopric of Alonso III de Fonseca, educated man, patron and friend of Erasmus of Rotterdam. Thus, since the beginning of the 16th century, the University will have several University Colleges where studies in Theology, Grammar and Art will be taught, a training offer that will soon be completed with the careers of Law and Medicine.
The USC will have great importance during the Enlightenment period, so King Carlos III will distinguish this University with the title of Royal and add the Crown symbol that, along with the weapons of Castile, Leon and Galicia, and the Emblems of the founders of the institution, make up the blazon of the University. Soon after, the students set an example of patriotism by forming the famous Literary Battalion that fought against the French during the Spanish War of Independence.
In the twentieth century we witness a spectacular growth in the number of students and degrees offered, so that new university faculties and campuses arise, creating two new institutions (the University of Vigo and the University of La Coruña) that will complement the educational offer from the Capitoline University.
The University is currently finalizing the adaptation to the EHEA and offers a large number of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in all areas of knowledge.
In 2009, the USC has been recognized for its Campus Vida project as a Campus of International Excellence by the Ministry of Education, a distinction that places it among the 9 best universities in the country. The goal of the university in the short term is to become one of the 100 best biosanitary campuses in the European Union.
The Library of the University of Santiago de Compostela, with 1,227,796 volumes, is the fifth largest university library in Spain after the Library of the Complutense University of Madrid and the libraries of the University of Barcelona, the University of Seville and the University from Valencia. On the other hand, it has an online repository, where you can consult books, magazines, Final Degree Projects (TFG), Master's Degree Final Projects (TFM), thesis ... And PreLo an online book lending platform, which works just like a physical library but with PDF and ebook documents.

Ways of Santiago in Spain

The situation of Santiago de Compostela in the northwestern end of the Iberian Peninsula, and that of the latter in the southwestern part of Europe, have made that over the centuries, the populous pilgrimages to the city of the Apostle have forged a rich artistic and cultural heritage throughout the entire Spanish geography, enriched in many cases by a natural environment of extraordinary landscape and ecological value.
The state of conservation, use and study of each of the historically known routes varies notably among all of them, although there is a general predisposition to make them a cultural, tourist, sports and religious instrument that contributes to the maintenance, restoration and enrichment of the places through which the different routes run.
It is also a living road to which other routes are added that the new and modern pilgrims are forging each year, taking advantage of the historical paths to which they add new routes of unique charm.
Over the centuries, these religious and commercial routes have come to further enrich the artistic and cultural heritage of these lands, in which a long history forged by the many civilizations that have populated them, is solely responsible for its being one of the richest and most varied on the planet.
In 1993 it was included by Unesco in the World Heritage of Humanity, although not all routes have been included in the list of goods.
