Church of San Bartolomé and Santa Tecla

The church of San Bartolomé and Santa Tecla is the parish of the city of Sitges, built in the 17th century with numerous subsequent modifications. Its asymmetrical silhouette, on a hill that presides over the beach, is one of the most characteristic images of the town of Sitges.
It is a baroque temple with three naves with a half-point vault reinforced by ribs. This church is from the 17th century, and is located in the same place that had already hosted two previous churches, one Romanesque and another Gothic (from 1322), poorly documented by the loss of documentation prior to the 17th century. The construction began in 1665 and the church was blessed on July 18, 1672. One of the two bell towers, the "tower of the comunidor", is two years later, in 1868 the bells and the clock of the town were put, a once the old "tower of the hours" of the main street has been demolished. In the nineteenth century important works were made again: between 1854 and 1856 the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament was built and in 1868 the second bell tower was renovated, octagonal.
The church retains several altarpieces. First, the central part of the Renaissance altarpiece (1499) of San Bartolomé and Santa Tecla, the work of Neapolitan painter Nicolás de Credença. This fragment is what remains of the central table and represents the patron saints of the town; Following the construction of the Gothic church, he was transferred to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Vinyet, from where he returned in 1939 to be installed behind the altar (study by art historian Isabel Coll i Mirabent, see the section on Bibliography). The altarpiece of the Roser is Renaissance, and the other altarpieces are baroque.
Under the choir two Gothic sepulchers of the years 1317 and 1322 are conserved, with the remains of Bernardo de Fonollar, Galceran de Ribes and Galcerán de Pacs. The baptistery and the side chapel - dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat - show paintings by Pere Pruna. Between 1950 and 1951, the architect Francesc Folguera carried out works in the dome and the main altar.
Apart from the nave and the temple cruise, two annexed chapels from the 19th century must be mentioned: that of the Ecce Homo and that of the Blessed Sacrament (this one with modern paintings by Darius Vilàs, who also painted the presbytery, all commissioned by the American philanthropist Charles Deering). Through the sacristy you can access the chapel of the Virgen de los Dolores.
