Tarifa is a Spanish municipality in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia. Within the main population center is the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, the tip of Tarifa or «Moroccan», a geographical accident that is located on the island of Las Palomas, today linked to the city itself by means of a highway- street, which serves as access to the lighthouse that is located there.
The cape or Punta de Tarifa also serves as a divide for the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, which intersect just in front of the city itself. It is located in the narrowest part of the canal or Strait of Gibraltar, at a minimum distance of 14 kilometers from the Moroccan coasts, which makes it the closest European city to the African continent.
Tarifa borders to the east with the municipal terms of Algeciras and Los Barrios, to the north with the term of Medina Sidonia, and to the northwest with those of Vejer de la Frontera and Barbate. The western, southern and southeastern boundaries are not political-administrative but physical, so in the west it borders the Atlantic Ocean and the south and southeast with the Mediterranean Sea.

Church of San Mateo (Tarifa)

The church of San Mateo is the main church of Tarifa (Province of Cádiz, Spain), since the extinct church of Santa María ceased to be, built on the remains of an old mosque within the Alcazaba (Tarifa). Its origin seems to be in the demographic and urban increase that the town experiences as a result of the Christian victory of the Battle of the Salado, and by the conquest that the Grenadians of Muhammed V make over Algeciras in the year 1369 after a brief siege, forcing Christians to take refuge and settle in Tarifa, carrying with them documents, jewelry, images and sacred vessels of the Algerian parish. His dedication is dedicated to this holy apostle in memory of that on that day the place was won to Muslims in 1292.

Tarifa Castle

The castle of Tarifa, also called the castle of Guzmán el Bueno or de los Guzmanes is a medieval fortress located in the Andalusian town of Tarifa, Spain. Although remains of Roman structures have been located inside, the current construction is a work of the Caliphate period. From the moment of its construction it has been exercising military functions related to its strategic position in the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula and the Strait of Gibraltar.
Although its primitive function was the defense of the city of Tarifa during the Reconquest, it was restored in the seventeenth century to fulfill defense functions against attacks by Berber pirates and during the War of Independence was the center of operations of the Spanish troops in the Tarife resistance. Even today the castle is owned by the Ministry of Defense having been declared of Cultural Interest in 1931.

The castle of Tarifa has a trapezoidal plant adapting to the escarpment of the land on which it is built. It is formed by an original caliphal core, the fortress itself, formed by ashlars with rope and blight. On its walls alternate canvases between 6.7 and 9.4 meters in length with 15 robust towers of which 13 are preserved and that stand out for a low horizontal projection (between 190 and 210 cm) with respect to their forehead (about 3.9 meters except in the corner towers.) The whole set is crowned by diamond-tipped battlements added after the Castilian conquest. This fortress was ordered to be built by Abd al-Rahman III in the year 930.
To the outside is a masonry barbican, also of Castilian factory, around the perimeter of the fortress with adarve and battlements that leaves a narrow corridor with the central construction. The barbican originally surrounded the entire medina of Tarifa, leaving the castle in the southwest corner, but today most of it has been lost after the growth of the city.

At the westernmost end of the castle is the octagonal Albarrana tower called Guzmán el Bueno tower that is part of the barbican and communicated with the castle through a coracha. On the canvas of the coracha is the so-called Gothic Gate, which communicates the round walk from the outside. The access to the castle is made on its west side, although the original access had to be located at the other end, from where it communicated with the medina and where there is currently a door from the period of the Taifa kingdoms. The current access is formed by a semicircular arch and barrel vault that gives access to the west courtyard with 16th-century buildings that were part of the Marquis de Tarifa Palace, Fadrique Enriquez. A second courtyard, larger than the previous one, is located in the eastern part and has a well and buildings from the 16th and 18th centuries. The tower of Guzmán el Bueno served as inspiration for the tower of the tribute of the Castle of Santiago de Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
