Church of Santa Catalina (Teulada)
The church of Santa Catalina is a temple of Catholic worship located in Teulada (Alicante), Valencian Community, Spain.
This church can date from the last third of the sixteenth century, built on a primitive church of Valencian Gothic style that had been built between the end of the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries.
The building of this temple responds to a double functionality: religious and defensive. The continuous attacks of the Berber piracy that from the coast of Africa severely and often punished the towns of the Valencian coast. Already in 1562 the Italian engineer J. B. Antonelli advised to reinforce the walls of the town of Teulada or fortify his church. The result of this report, in addition to the repeated requests of the Jury and Justices of the town, was that a building of proportions be built that we can describe as majestic if we consider what the population of Teulada was at that time (almost 600 inhabitants in the year 1574). The works lasted around 35-40 years and were paid in full by the villagers by imposing different contributions that affected the commons of the population.
Various documents give us an idea of the importance of the Church as a strength for the defense of the people and term of Teulada.
