newTudela Cathedral
The cathedral of Santa María (Santa María la Mayor) of Tudela (Navarra) is a large Cistercian late-Romanesque temple, which began to be built at the end of the 12th century during the reign of Sancho VI el Sabio, passing the Witness to his son Sancho VII the Fort, who in turn passed him to his nephew Teobaldo I. He used some of the foundations of the Tudela Mayor Mosque (IX to XI centuries). As the orientations of the two temples did not coincide, the mosque was demolished to build the new temple and only some of its foundations were used.
The current temple is located between the current Old Square and the Roso, Portal and Horno Higuera streets of the old town of Tudela.
Initially it served as a collegiate church, becoming a cathedral when in the 18th century Tudela separated from the diocese of neighboring Tarazona. It was elevated to the dignity of the cathedral by Pius VI, at the request of Carlos III, in the 18th century.

Mosque of Tudela
The biggest mosque in Tudela was the Aljama mosque (major or main) of the city of Tudela during Muslim times. It was built in the mid-ninth century under the initiative of Musa ibn Musa.
The site where it was built is currently occupied by the current Plaza Vieja and the Tudela Cathedral, excluding what corresponds to the part of the Cathedral's cruise and a good part of its cloisters and lakes. In 1121, the Great Mosque was occupied for Christian worship.
This first mosque, of archaic aspect, had to be expanded, changing in the structural and the ornamental with the passage of time. It seems that, at the beginning of the 10th century, it was sacked and burned by the Navarrese King Sancho Garcés I. Then it was reformed and extended at the beginning of the 11th under the patronage of the Tuyibis during the taifado of Zaragoza, specifically with Mundir I, having for indisputable models the Mosque of Cordoba and the Mosque of Madinat al-Zahra. In these mosques the presence or imprint of the Great Mosque of Qayrawan (Tunisia) is noted.
