Valencia

Valencia (in Valencian and officially Valencia, AFI: [vaˈlensia]) is a municipality and a city in Spain, capital of the homonymous province and the Valencian Community. With a population of 791 413 inhabitants (INE, 2018), which rises to 1,559,908 inhabitants if its urban space is included, it is the third most populous city and metropolitan area in Spain, behind Madrid and Barcelona.
Valencia was founded by the Romans as a colony in the year 138 a. C., being consul Tenth June Gross Galaico, and was named Valentia Edetanorum. Several centuries later, in 711, the Muslims occupied the city contributing their language, religion and customs, such as the introduction of irrigation systems and the introduction of new crops. In 1238 the Christian king Jaime I of Aragon reconquered the city, and distributed the lands among the nobles who helped him conquer it, as testified in the Llibre del Repartiment, as well as created a new law for the city, the Fueros of Valencia, which were extended to the rest of the kingdom of Valencia. In the eighteenth century, Felipe V repealed the privileges as punishment for the kingdom of Valencia for aligning with the Austracists in the war of Spanish succession. In 1982, Valencia was established as the capital of the current Valencian Community, as stated in the Statute of Autonomy.
The city is located on the banks of the Turia River, on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula, right in the center of the Gulf of Valencia, although at the time the Romans founded it, it was on a river island of Turia, about four kilometers away from the sea. About ten kilometers south of the city is the Albufera of Valencia, which has been owned by the Valencia City Council since 1911 when it was purchased from the Crown of Spain for 1,072,980.41 pesetas. The lagoon is one of the largest lakes in Spain, since it has about 2100 hectares, to which we must add an area of 14 100 hectares of marjal dedicated to the cultivation of rice. Due to its value Cultural, historical and ecological, this natural site was the first natural park declared by the Generalitat Valenciana, in 1986.
At present, the city's economy is focused on services, since about 84% of the active population employed belongs to the services sector. However, the city maintains an industrial base, with a percentage of employed population of 5.5%. On the other hand, agricultural activities, even having a relatively minor importance with only 1.9% of the active population occupied, survive in the municipality with a total of 3973 hectares, which are mostly occupied by crops of orchard and citrus.
Its historic center is one of the largest in Spain, with approximately 169 hectares, and thanks to its historical and monumental heritage and its various scenic and cultural spaces make it one of the cities with the largest influx of national tourism and International of the whole country. Among its most representative monuments are the Miguelete, the Cathedral, the Serranos and Quart Towers, the Silk Exchange, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1996, and the City of Arts and Sciences. [ 14] It should also be noted that the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia is the most important pictorial museum in the Valencian Community, being the second art gallery in Spain, as well as the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM), which aims to investigate and disseminate the art of the twentieth century.
Due to its long history, this is a city with countless festivals and traditions, among which the faults, which were declared as festivals of international tourist interest on January 25, 1965 and Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Humanity by UNESCO on November 30, 2016, and the Water Tribunal, also declared in 2009 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In addition to this, Valencia has been, and is in the Today, the scene of various world events that have helped to shape the city and give it international projection, such as the Regional Exhibition of 1909, the 32nd and the 33rd Cup Sailing America, the Formula 1 European Grand Prix, the Tennis Open 500, and the Equestrian Global Champions Tour.
Since 2015, the mayor is Joan Ribó, from Compromís, who came to the mayor's office thanks to the Nau Government Pact, signed for his training with the PSPV and València en Comú. In 2019, Joan Ribó I Canut won the elections and was re-elected mayor.

Valencia bullring

The bullring of Valencia was built throughout the 1850s, on the site of a previous square that, due to budget problems, never ended. It is neoclassical, specifically Doric simple, inspired by Roman civil architecture, the Flavian amphitheater (Colosseum), or the Nimes amphitheater (France). It was built by the Valencian architect Sebastián Monleón Estellés. Its structure is formed by a 48-sided polygon, with 384 arches outside, made of brick following the Neomudéjar style.

Main Theater (Valencia)

The Principal Theater of Valencia (Spain) was the first theater built in the city as we conceive the theater today.
Located on Calle de las Barcas, No. 15, in the district of Ciutat Vella, it was an initial project by Italian architect Filippo Fontana in 1774, but later the original plans were modified. Its construction did not begin until years later, and although it was inaugurated in 1832, the work was not completely finished until 1854. The interior was initially decorated in the purest Rococo style.
As an artistic event, the Valencian press announced, the performance of the Russian Ballets «from the Metropolitan Opera House theaters in New York, Real de Madrid, Liceo de Barcelona, Gran Opera de Paris and San Carlo de Lisboa, directed by Mr. Sergei Diaghilev », for April 25, 27, 28 and 30, 1918
Among the operatic premieres held at the Teatro Principal, those of El Gato Montés by Maestro Manuel Penella stand out on February 23, 1916; La Venta de los Gatos, posthumous opera by maestro José Serrano (with the arrangement, orchestration and orchestral direction of maestro Enrique Estela), on April 24, 1943; and The Triomf of Tirant by Master Amand Blanquer, on October 7, 1992.
On March 16, 1969 he hosted the official presentation to the public of the popular singer Nino Bravo and his ensemble, Los Superson, a gala that even today remembers hundreds of fans of pop music.
From 1943 until the inauguration of the Palau de la Música, in 1987, it served as the intermittent headquarters of the Valencia Orchestra.
In the nineties the theater underwent reforms to adapt it to regulations and make it more comfortable, modern and accessible.
The programming in the Principal theater is varied, music, dance and theater shows are offered.

Church of Santa Catalina and San Agustín

The parochial church of Santa Catalina and San Agustín, located in the street de la Mare de Deu de Gràcia (Our Lady of Grace) number 5 of the city of Valencia, in Spain, is the church of the former convent of hermit friars of San Agustín settled in Valencia in the thirteenth century.
This convent of Valencian Gothic style had a cloister next to the church, occupying the current adjacent garden, with sixteen arches per band. In the seventeenth century another cloister was built to the north side, and the former one was raised on one floor. During the War of Independence it served as a barracks for French troops in 1812. The temple was renovated in 1815. After the confiscation of 1836 the convent units were used as a prison until their demolition in 1904, leaving only the church open to worship.
The single-nave church with chapels between buttresses has a five-sided polygonal apse covered with a starry cross vault, while the six sections of the nave do so with simple cross vaults, the section closest to the presbytery is wider and corresponds to two chapels. It presents high chorus at the feet in which the only original key is found. In 1692 a baroque lining was added, which was repressed from 1940. Of particular relevance is the medieval icon of the Virgin of Grace that houses this church.
The side cover must have been made during the first third of the 17th century. It is flanked by pairs of Doric columns on pedestals, topped with a broken curved pediment; at the top a niche between scrolls with the image of the titular saint, topped by a triangular split pediment.
In 1912 a new bell tower was built by the architect Luis Ferreres, in brick, which would be covered with a gothic morphology in the postwar intervention.

After the Civil War it was so affected that it was thought of its demolition. Javier Goerlich made an intervention, in 1940, that gave it its current, historicist look, with old stone cladding in the eastern wall, formation of low dependencies at the foot of the apse and provision of new gothic morphology for the southern facade and the bell tower . This intervention is accused in the façade at the foot and in the bell tower and seek to reproduce the primitive architectural structure of the building.
The Valencian sculptor and imaginer José Justo Villalba (brother of Antonio Justo, parish priest of the Church) carried out, in a work that lasted several years, the total interior renovation of the church, providing much of the current imagery of the temple as well as the rest of decorative details: stained glass, altarpieces, benches, marbles, lamps, altars, reliefs, etc. To him it is due, among many other decorative details, the High Altar, with the images of round bulk of San Agustín and Santa Catalina, the altarpiece of San Vicente, the Immaculate Conception, the Crucified Christ, the chapel of the communion, diverse reliefs, pulpits, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Saint Joseph and the exterior images of Saint Augustine, Saint Vincent and the Virgin.

Bank of Valencia building

The Bank of Valencia building is a historic building located on Pintor Sorolla street 2 and 4, corner of Juan de Austria street in the Spanish city of Valencia. It was built in 1942 with an initial project written by Javier Goerlich Lleó in 1935, although it underwent several subsequent modifications. It was the headquarters of the Bank of Valencia, and since December 2017 it is of Caixabank.
The imposing image shown by this building results from a project readjustment with respect to the original proposal. Goerlich makes a first proposal in which he reveals all his potential as a rationalist architect that he feels. But the promoter, the Bank of Valencia, does not coincide at this time with the author's ideas, turning to a more regionalist and chasticist solution, typical of the moment that began in Spain after the Civil War.
