Villa Noailles

The Villa Noailles, built in 1923 in Hyères (department of Var, France), is the work of the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens.
Commissioned by Viscount Charles de Noailles and his wife Marie-Laure Bischoffsheim, patrons and friends of great figures of modern art, such as Man Ray, the villa is one of the first French buildings of modern style.
It is representative of the principles of the rationalist movement, for its search for maximum luminosity, the functionality of the house and its decorative economy.
The most recognized artists of the time were used for its construction and decoration: Mondrian, Francis Jourdain, etc. It was expanded successively until 1933, reaching 1,800 m², with private pool, squash court and gym. Raised on the hill of the old castle that dominates the city of Hyères, the villa also includes a large Mediterranean garden, initially planted by the Viscount of Noailles.
Construction work began in 1924 and was extended ten years. During this time it was a place to experiment with new trends in decoration and furniture.
Man Ray filmed there in 1928 his first film Les Mystères du Château de Dé, which he dedicated to the Viscount of Noailles.
