Le havre
The Havre (Le Havre / ləˈɑvʁ /, in French) is a city and commune in northwestern France located in the department of Seine Maritime, in the Normandy region. The Havre is a sub-prefecture, the largest in France and the head (bureau centralisateur in French) of six cantons.
It is located on the right bank of the river Seine estuary on the banks of the English Channel.
The Havre was heavily bombed during World War II. Therefore, it was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1949. The destroyed area was rebuilt between 1945 and 1964 according to the plan of a team led by the architect Auguste Perret. In 2005, Unesco entered the reconstructed Center of El Havre in the World Heritage of Humanity, welcoming the "novel exploitation of the potential of concrete". The space where it is located, of 133 hectares, represents according to UNESCO "an exceptional example of the architecture of post-war urbanism" and is one of the rare places of this type registered in Europe.
His nickname is Oceanic Gate. Architecturally, this image is given by the "door" that forms the building that is at the end of Foch Avenue that flows into the sea. It is the second French port, the first Norman city and the second metropolitan area of Upper Normandy.
