Lyon (in French: Lyon [ljɔ̃]; in Franco-Provencal: Liyon) is a city in central-eastern France, capital of the Metropolis of Lyon, the Rhone department and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . The traditional place-name in Spanish, now in disuse, is León de Francia to distinguish it from the homonymous city located in Spain.

Lyon is the second university city in France, hosting more than 140,000 students in its metropolitan area distributed in three universities and numerous engineering schools and "great écoles".
