Poitiers (in Poitevino Potchiers, in Occitan Peiteus, in ancient Spanish Piteos ) is a city of central France, prefecture (capital) of the department of Vienna, in the New Aquitaine region, located on the banks of the Clain river.

The district of Poitiers is a district (in French arrondissement) of France, which is located in the department of Vienne, in the region of Poitou-Charentes. It has 15 cantons and 87 communes.
The capital of a department is called subprefecture (sous-préfecture). When a district contains the prefecture (capital) of the department - as in the case of Poitiers - that prefecture is also the capital of the district, behaving as a prefecture and as a subprefecture.

Its capital (or prefecture) is Poitiers (formerly Piteos) and its inhabitants receive the French language Viennois (Viennese).

Notre-Dame-la-Grande is a parish church, a former Romanesque-style collegiate church located in the French city of Poitiers, in the Poitou-Charentes region. Although historiography mentions that it was possibly started in the 10th century, it was in the 11th century that it was mostly built, on ancient vestiges of a building, from which some stones and bricks subsist, and consecrated by Cardinal Bishop of Ostia, the future Urban Pope II, in 1086.
Its richly carved and sculpted facade is characteristic, recognized as a masterpiece in what constitutes the period of Romanesque sculpture in France and specifically of the Poitou school, of which more information could be given.
The facade, completely vertical, consists of three floors in which respectively the front, the central window and the pediment are located with a mandorla, flanked by paths circular towers at each end.

The University of Poitiers (French Université de Poitiers) is one of the oldest universities in France located in the city of Poitiers and has approx. 24,000 students (of them 3,000 foreigners) and 2,300 scientific employees. The highest president of the university is Prof. Jean-Pierre Gesson, rector of the same.

Poitiers station is the main railway station in the French city of Poitiers. High-speed trains, as well as large, medium-distance and regional trains run through it.
In 2007, it was used by about 2.5 million passengers.

The Sainte-Croix museum is the largest museum in the city of Poitiers, France. Built in 1974 following the project of the architect Jean Monge, it is located in what was the Sainte-Croix abbey.
His collection is divided into different parts such as prehistory, ancient and medieval archeology, fine arts or history of Poitou.
