Harrogate is a city in England in the county of North Yorkshire. Its population is estimated at 151,300 inhabitants.
The city is a tourist destination and its tourist attractions include its hot springs and the RHS Harlow Carr gardens. Nearby is the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Harrogate emerged from two smaller settlements, high and low Harrogate in the 17th century. Harrogate hot springs contain iron salt, sulfur and sodium chloride. The city became known as The English Spa in the Georgian era, after its waters were discovered in the 16th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries, ferruginous waters (that is, containing iron) became a popular health treatment, and the influx of rich but sickly visitors contributed significantly to the city's wealth.
The motto of the city is Arx celebris fontibus, which means "a famous citadel for its waters".
