Newcastle upon Tyne, (/ njuːˈkæsəl /) commonly known as Newcastle, is a city and metropolitan district of Tyne and Wear, in the Northeast region of England (United Kingdom). Historically it was part of the Northumbria region. Located on the banks of the River Tyne.
The city is the 20th most populous in England, the Tyneside agglomeration, of which Newcastle is a part, is the sixth most populous urban agglomeration in the United Kingdom. Newcastle is a member of the Group of major English cities and with Gateshead form part of the Eurocities network of European cities.

Tyne and Wear (in English: Tyne and Wear, pronounced / ˌtʲaɪn ... ˈwɪə /) is one of the forty-seven counties of England, United Kingdom, with capital in Newcastle. Located in the Northeast region it borders to the west and north with Northumberland, to the east with the North Sea and to the south with Durham. Includes the area of the estuaries of the Tyne and Wear rivers.
It is divided into the following metropolitan districts, all with the municipality status: South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and Sunderland. In 1986 the county council was abolished and many of its powers passed to the metropolitan districts. The ceremonial county still exists and remains a legal entity.
It was created from Northumberland County in 1974 by the reorganization of local government.

The University of Newcastle is a university in the United Kingdom located in the town of Newcastle upon Tyne in northern England. It was founded by agreement of the British Parliament in 1963.
His background is in the College of Medicine established in the city in 1834, formally converted to the University of Durham College in 1851. In 1871 he founded the College of Physical Sciences and Armstrong College (in honor of William George Armstrong). Armstrong College and the College of Medicine joined together to form King's College in Durham in 1937. The progressive growth of the Newcastle campus led to the definitive creation as an independent center in 1963.
In the 2005-2006 academic year, it had more than 17,700 students. Its Medical School is one of the most important in the United Kingdom and was the first European and second institution in the world that obtained authorization to work with stem cells from human embryos.
