Paisley / ˈpeɪzli / (in Scottish Gaelic: Pàislig / ˈpʰaːʃʎikʲ /) is a town in the western part of the Lowlands of Scotland, United Kingdom. It is located on the northern border of the Gleniffer Braes Mountains and extends on both sides of the Cart River. Paisley is the administrative capital of the Renfrewshire council and is part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. It is located 11.1 km east of downtown Glasgow.
Paisley is considered the largest town (without city status) in Scotland with a population of 76,834 inhabitants at the 2011 census, being the fifth largest town in Scotland, after the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. Paisley has a population greater than Inverness, Stirling and Perth, which do have city status. Paisley largely forms the southwest part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation.
Paisley hosts the campus of the University of Western Scotland.
