Shrewsbury (/ ˈʃruːzbri / o / ˈʃroʊzbri /) is the county town of Shropshire in the West Midlands, England, United Kingdom. It is located near Wales (in Welsh, Amwythig). It is located on the banks of the River Severn. It is the main settlement of the borough of Shrewsbury and Atcham, with a population of 95,850 inhabitants. Consequently, it is the second largest city in its ceremonial county, after Telford.
Shrewsbury is a historic commercial city whose urban center has an unaltered medieval plan. In the city, some 660 classified monuments stand out, including examples of armor from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a fortified red sandstone castle, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively, by the Norman count of Shrewsbury, Roger II of Montgomery. The city is home to one of the longest and oldest horticultural events in the country, the Shrewsbury Flower Show, known for its floral monitors, having won several awards since the beginning of the 21st century, including Britain in Bloom in 2006.
Today, 14 km or 9 miles from the Welsh border, Shrewsbury serves as a commercial and cultural center for ceremonial county and much of Central Wales, with an output equivalent to about 299 million pounds a year. It has some lamp industries and distribution centers, as well as Battlefield, located mainly in the suburbs. The strategic roads A5 and A49 pass through the city, as do several railway lines at the Shrewsbury railway station.
