Watford is a city and district in Hertfordshire, England, 17 miles (27 km) northwest of London and within the limits of the M25 motorway. The town is located just north of Greater London.
The rural parish of Watford covers an area south of the municipal district of Watford (extensively urbanized), in the Three Rivers District. The nearby areas, Bushey, Rickmansworth, Kings Langley, Abbots Langley, Oxhey and Leavesden, located in the Three Rivers and the Hertsmere districts, make up the Watford zip code area.
The most recent official data estimates the population of Watford at 79 300 inhabitants in mid-2005. The borough had more than 80,000 inhabitants for the 2001 Census. The urban area, which includes many of the neighborhood Three Rivers, has a total population of 120 960, being the 47th largest urban area in England.
Watford was created as an urban district under the Local Government Act of 1894, and became a municipal borough by granting a statute in 1922.
