Whitby is a city located on the northeast coast of England, in the province (district) of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. It receives the same name of "Whitby" the civil parish to which it belongs, which according to the census that was made in 2001, then had 13,594 inhabitants. The city is 76 km away. from that of York, and extends along both banks of the mouth of the Esk River, along the narrow valley carved by it. At that latitude, the English east coast yields the entrance to the North Sea, so that the city of Whitby, rather than the sea lift, looks to the north.
