Akureyri is a city in Iceland, located on the coast of the Norðurland Eystra region. It is the fourth urban center of the country, after Reykjavik, Hafnarfjörður and Kópavogur, with a population of 18,869 inhabitants in December 2015.
It is located on the west side of the Eyjafjörður fjord, right at its base, and on the banks of the Glerá river. It is surrounded by mountains, of which the largest are Súlur with 1,213 meters above sea level, and Hlíðarfjall with 1,116 meters above sea level.
Despite being located in the north of Iceland, very close to the Arctic Circle, it has a relatively warmer oceanic climate than the rest of the country and its corresponding geographical area. This is due to its situation in a protected fjord. Its free water port, which does not freeze, has played a significant role in the country's history. It has the main airport in the region.

Norðurland Eystra (in Spanish: Northeast Region) is one of the eight regions of Iceland. It is located northeast of the country. Its capital and most populous city, Akureyri, is located in its northwest area.
