It is the third main city of southern Italy after Naples and Palermo. It is located on the Adriatic coast and its province (metropolitan city since 1/1/2015) is the fifth largest in the country. It has 327,361 inhabitants (12-31-2014), 750,000 in the urban area and 1,266,000 in the metropolitan area. It borders the communes Adelfia, Bitonto, Bitritto, Capurso, Giovinazzo, Modugno, Mola di Bari, Noicattaro, Triggiano and Valenzano.
