Cagliari
Cagliari or Cáller (in Italian, Cagliari; in Sardinian, Casteddu) is an Italian city and municipality and capital of the region of Sardinia, the most populous city on the island and capital of the Metropolitan city of Cagliari.
The Sardinian name of Cagliari, Casteddu, literally means "castle." The city has approximately 150,000 inhabitants, while its metropolitan area (including Elmas, Assemini, Capoterra, Selargius, Sestu, Monserrato, Quartucciu, Quartu Sant'Elena and other 8 municipalities) has more than 450,000 inhabitants.
Ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has seen the passage through its streets of various civilizations. Under the buildings of the modern city there is a continuous stratification of human settlements for about 5,000 years, from the Neolithic to the present day. There are some Domus de Janas, very damaged by the passage of time, a great necropolis from the time of Carthage, an amphitheater from the Roman era, a Byzantine basilica, two time towers of the Republic of Pisa, and a robust system of fortifications from the times when the city was the center of the Spanish Habsburg Empire in Mediterranean waters. Its natural resources have always been its protected harbor, the top of a fortified hill, Monti Castru, the modern neighborhood of "Casteddu de Sus", the salt lagoons, and the interior of the island, the wheat of the Campidano and the mines of the Even
It was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (which became the Kingdom of Italy in 1861) from 1324 to 1848, when it was replaced by the city of Turin. Today Cagliari is the cultural, educational, political and artistic center of the island, known for its diverse art nouveau architecture and several monuments, and it is also the economic and industrial center of Sardinia, as it has one of the most important ports of the Mediterranean Sea , an international airport and a per capita income comparable to the cities of northern Italy such as Milan or Turin.
The city is also the headquarters of the University of Cagliari, founded in 1607 and of the Archdiocese of Sardinia Primacy since the 5th century AD.

Cathedral of Santa Maria de Cagliari
Cagliari Cathedral, commonly called Santa María Cathedral, is an Italian Catholic church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and Santa Cecilia. It is the main church of the archdiocese of Cagliari, seat of the chair of the metropolitan archbishop, and also a parish temple in the historic district of Castello.
The church amalgams various artistic styles and guards seven centuries of historical memory of the city of Cagliari. Built during the 13th century in the Romanesque Pisan style, it was elevated to the rank of cathedral in 1258. When Cagliari was the capital of the kingdom of Sardinia, the representatives of the three stamenti (arms of the Sardinian parliament) were sworn there. During the 17th century, it was decided to transform the temple into a new style, the Baroque. In the 1930s the current neo-Romanesque facade was erected, inspired by the facade of the cathedral of Pisa.
The cathedral, besides being an important place of worship in which the main celebrations of the liturgical year preceded by the archbishop are held, is one of the most notable and visited monuments of the city.
