Catania is the second largest city in Sicily; located on the east coast, it is the capital of the metropolitan city that bears his name. The city has 337,862 inhabitants (2014) and 770,000 in its metropolitan area, sixth in Italy and second in the island, after Palermo. Teatro Massimo Bellini is the Catania opera house in Sicily, Italy, named Bellini in honor of the native composer of that city Vincenzo Bellini and to differentiate it from the Palermo Massimo Theater in Sicily.

It was inaugurated on May 31, 1890 with the opera Norma, Bellini's masterpiece.
The idea of a great opera house was born in 1693 after the city was razed by an earthquake. In 1812 the fundamental stone was laid by the architect Salvatore Zahra Buddha. Lack of funds and bureaucratic problems postponed its construction and instead the "Provisional Municipal Theater" was built, opened in 1822 and destroyed in during World War II.
On the other hand, the Nuovaluce Theater partially built in 1865 was assigned to the task of architect Carlo Sada in 1870
and completed to be released in May 1890. In Sicilian Baroque, the horseshoe has 4 levels of boxes and the dome shows frescoes describing Bellini's operas.
For the centenary of Bellini, Norma was produced with Gina Cigna and for the 150th anniversary of the composer's birthday in 1951 Norma was presented with Maria Callas, the most famous Norma of the 20th century, who repeated success in 1952. It was the favorite theater of the tenor Beniamino Gigli There they sang and directed Gino Marinuzzi, Vittorio Gui, Antonio Guarnieri, Georg Solti, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Toti Dal Monte, Renata Tebaldi, Montserrat Caballe, Renata Scotto, Mirella Freni, Tito Schipa, Franco Corelli, Luciano Pavarotti, Aureliano Pertile, Mario Del Monaco, Tito Gobbi, and Leo Nucci among others.
The theater has specialized in the presentation and exhumation of Bellini's best known and rarest operas, from Norma, I Puritani, The Sleepwalker, I Capuleti and Montecchi to Beatrice di Tenda in 1970 with Raina Kabaivanska and La Straniera and Zaira in 1975 with Renata Scotto.
In 2001 for the Bellini bicentennial, renovation work was carried out.

The Roman theater of Catania is located in the center of the city of Catania (Sicily, Italy), in the San Francisco square, between the Via Vittorio Emanuele and the Via del Teatro Greek. The theater, dating from the second century AD. C., was built on a previous building of the 1st century AD. C..
