La Spezia
La Spezia, in Ligurian language A Spézza, (95,701 inhabitants in 2012) is a city in the Liguria region, in northern Italy, and capital of the Province of the same name, which is located in the Gulf of La Spezia, known also like Golfo dei Poeti. Specifically, the city is between hills and the sea. In the western area of La Spezia is the military arsenal while on the eastern side of the gulf is the commercial port, one of the most important in Italy. It is located between Genoa and Pisa, washed by the Ligurian Sea. La Spezia also houses one of the largest military industries in the country: OTO Melara.
The Gulf of La Spezia is also called Golfo dei Poeti (Gulf of the Poets) as it was the residence for some time of important English poets such as Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) and George Byron (1788-1824).
Although La Spezia is characterized by being a modern city (almost all buildings were built from 1920), there are many places of interest in its surroundings since the area has very beautiful villages such as Lerici, Portovénere (typical fishing village) and the Cinque Terre where a National natural park has been developed.
Both Cinque Terre and Portovénere and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, have been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site (code 826-001).
