Matera

Matera is a city and municipality, capital of the homonymous province, and the first city in the Basilicata region, in southern Italy (which is sometimes named as Lucania). It is inhabited by some 60,383 inhabitants.
Apart from an economy that has traditionally been based on agriculture, in the late 1990s, the main economic resource of Matera, and the cities that surround it, is the production of upholstery.
The city is at an oblique angle to a canyon, which has been eroded over the years by a small stream, the Gravina. It has a very particular old town, in which the houses were excavated in limestone. «The Sassi and the whole of the rock churches of Matera» have been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1993.
On October 17, 2014, the city was chosen as the Italian headquarters of the European Capital of Culture 2019.
