Royal Palace of Naples
The Royal Palace of Naples (in Italian: Palazzo Reale di Napoli) is a historic building located in the Plebiscito square, in the historic center of Naples. Although it is in this square where the main entrance is located, there are other accesses to the complex, which also includes the San Carlos gardens and theater, from Piazza Trieste e Trento, Piazza del Municipio and Via Acton.
The palace was the residence of the Spanish viceroys and after the Bourbon dynasty for more than a hundred years, from 1734 to 1861, first as kings of Naples and Sicily (1734-1816) and later as kings of the Two Sicilies (1816- 1861). This Bourbon use was interrupted only for a decade at the beginning of the 19th century, with French rule and the government of José Bonaparte and Joaquín Murat (1806-1815). After the Italian Unification (1861) it passed to the Savoy, until Victor Manuel III ceded it to the State in 1919. Then, the palace was opened to the public and its western half went to house the Museum of the Royal Apartment , while the east became the headquarters of the National Library, uses that continue today.
The construction of the Royal Palace began in 1600, until it reached its final appearance in 1858. In its construction and in the subsequent restorations numerous renowned architects such as Domenico Fontana, Francesco Antonio Picchiatti, Ferdinando Sanfelice, Luigi Vanvitelli and Gaetano Genovese have participated.
