Arnhem ([ˈɑrnɛm]) is the capital of the province of Gelderland, and also a municipality, which is located in the east of the Netherlands. Arnhem has about 150,803 inhabitants (2014), and in its metropolitan area (Stadsregio Arnhem-Nijmegen) reside approximately 738,700. Arnhem is located at the edges of the Rhine River and has important bridges that link to the rest of the Netherlands.
In 1944 during the German occupation in World War II, the capture of the Arnhem bridge over the Rhine became the main objective of the Market Garden operation initiated by the Allies. The fierce fighting on the bridge and its surroundings left that part of the city destroyed.
Until 2007, the multinational chemical group AkzoNobel was based in the city.
In 1986, the city was awarded, together with the Austrian Klagenfurt, with the European Prize, a distinction awarded annually by the Council of Europe, since 1955, to those municipalities that have made remarkable efforts to promote the ideal of European unity.
