Haarlem [ˈɦaːrlɛm] is a municipality and a city in the Netherlands, capital of the province of North Holland. It is located near the mouth of the Spaarne River, in the Noordzeekanaal, just 20 km west of the national capital, Amsterdam.
In 1658 the Dutch gave the name of Nieuw Haarlem ("New Haarlem") to the town of Manhattan, New York. Then, in 1664, when the British took control of the Dutch colony they baptized it with their definitive name: New York. Today a neighborhood in New York City is named after Harlem.

The Teyler Museum (in Dutch, Teylers Museum), in Haarlem, is the oldest museum in the Netherlands. It is located in the old house of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702–1778), who was an important cloth merchant and banker in Amsterdam of Scottish descent, and who donated his fortune to collaborate with the advancement of religion, art and The science. He was a Mennonite and faithful follower of the Scottish Enlightenment. Near the museum is the Teylers Hofje, a hofje (charity accommodation) that was also founded in honor of Teyler.

Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (March 25, 1702 - April 8, 1778) was a wealthy Dutch and Mennonite merchant, who, when dying without offspring, left an inheritance of two million in Dutch florin for the development of religion, the art and science of his hometown, leading to the formation of the Teyler museum. However, his contribution is not limited to this museum, since the Hofje de Teyler was also founded on his behalf and made important donations to the Mennonite community.
