Las Vegas Grand Prix
The Las Vegas Grand Prix or Caesars Palace Grand Prix was a speed racing race that was held in Las Vegas, United States. It was valid for the Formula 1 world championship in 1981 and 1982, and for the Champ Car in 1983, 1984 and 2007.
When Watkins Glen left the Formula 1 calendar in 1980, Las Vegas was selected as the setting for a Grand Prix. This new race closed the calendar, while Long Beach was the first race. However, it was not very popular among pilots due to the intense heat of the desert. The race was held in the parking area of the Caesars Palace hotel and, for a non-permanent circuit, the facilities were quite elaborate. It was wide enough to allow overtaking, safety areas in sand and a surface as uniform as glass. It was running counterclockwise. When Nelson Piquet achieved his first drivers' championship by finishing fifth in the 1981 competition, it took him almost fifteen minutes to recover from the fatigue caused by the heat, having barely reached the goal.
The race went to the orbit of the Champ Car, which ran the renowned Grand Prix of Caesars Palace in 1983 and 1984. Already in 2007, the category played the Las Vegas Grand Prix on a street circuit near Fremont Street Experience.
