Nashville
Nashville is the capital of the state of Tennessee, in the United States, and the administrative headquarters of Davidson County. It is the second most populous city in the state; ahead is the city of Memphis. It is located on the banks of the Cumberland River, in Davidson County, in the north-central part of the state. It is usually known as "Music City, USA", (City of Music) since Nashville has an important record industry. But it has long been referred to as the "Athens of the South", due to its educational institutions and its neoclassical architecture. There are several other industrial sectors which contribute to the city's economy, including health, publishing, banking, and transportation.
In addition to being the county seat, Nashville itself has a consolidated government with Davidson County. (A city-county or city-county government.) The city-county government includes seven minor municipalities in a two-tier system. Some responsibilities are exercised by the municipalities themselves while others are specific to the city-county government. The population figure in the city-county of Nashville-Davidson was estimated at 626,681 for the year 2010, according to the United States Census Bureau. In the same year, the population of the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes 13 counties, was estimated at 1,582,264. So the metropolitan area is the largest in the state of Tennessee.
